Online Students: Chris Wainwright, PGA UK

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Being quite familiar with major back problems I see some similarities in the problems Chris is experiencing with his swing and what I constantly fight in my own swing, which is initiating the forward swing with proper sequence. The change of direction from clockwise to counter-clockwise must be initiated by the muscles of the right hip, and as the rotation works against the stabilized right leg the pelvis advances to the left as it unwinds.

Lesson of the Week: Dan Sullivan

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I like this lesson a lot because it is a great example of a swing problem that has no explainable cause. Dan is a very tall guy, but he is athletic and perfectly capable of making a nice, full swing, when there is no ball in front of him. When his brain knows that he is going to hit the ball his right wrist bends back, his right arm jams up, and his left arm squashes low against his chest, which means that his backswing is not going much past left arm parallel.

Online Students: John Lamendola Part 6 – Nice Progress

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

As you will see, John has every reason to be excited because he has just figured out (with a little help) how to change an age old chronic pattern, which as you know is quite hard to do. We have changed a bunch of things for the better in John’s swing, but still the hands wanted to loop back and drop the right arm behind him in transition, something he hated to see and desperately wanted to change.

Improvement: Peter Procops, PGA Part 13

By Wayne | Improvement

This lesson is a composite of four short lessons. In the first video Pete’s left knee is moving too far down and in I’d like it more stable so it can get out of the way sooner. Also the left wrist is cupped too long approaching impact. The next lesson we move on to the shoulders being a bit too flat so I’m looking for a bit more tilt here.

Swing Analysis: Wayne D. Prepping for the National Senior Club Pro Championship

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

These swings represent another day (or two) in the life of a golfer trying to execute a swing that does what he knows will hit the ball better. What this constant studying shows is that chronic issues are usually mechanical in nature, and that seeing the same mistakes over and over, while hugely annoying, is the only way to decide what exactly to focus on when trying to improve.

Lesson of the Week: Ethan Chelf Working the Split Hand Punch Shot

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Ethan has come along at warp speed this summer, but we still have great difficulty getting his hips to open and his right side to fire into impact. I have tried to do a lot of hands on work getting him to feel where he needs to be and what he needs to aim for as far as pivot motion and position in the downswing, but it seemed like his hips were too weak and just did not want to be stressed by staying deep while opening and getting his pressure shifted over toward the outside of his left foot.

Swing Analysis: Patrick Reed 2016

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Here is a video that is proof that if you are gifted enough you can hit the golf ball exceptionally well while doing a bunch of things that most teachers would regard as poor technique. At full speed Reed’s swing looks perfectly normal, and since he routinely hits great shots and wins lots of money you might figure that it would be something to emulate. When we slow it down, however, we see that a lot of what he does any decent teaching pro would never think of teaching.
