Swing Analysis: Right Arm Action: Drive it in or Leave it back?

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In this video I take a look at the way the right arm functions in different players, and discuss my reasons for preferring one method over the other. We start with Tiger Woods and Henrik Stenson, both of whom have great looking lines in their swings when watching from down the line. There is a major difference, however, in the way they use their right arm in during the swing to produce those lines. Stenson flares his arm in the backswing (as I would prefer and as I teach) but then leaves it back when the body changes direction so…

Chamblee on McIlroy: “Insufficient”, or Less Than Stellar Lower Body Movement

By Wayne | Videos: As Seen On TV and Extras

I happened to be flipping through channels when I caught this short piece, and when I heard Brandel ripping Rory and comparing him to Byron Nelson I knew I had another video in the can. Chamblee is mind-boggling: he takes the best players in the world, waits for them to have a bad round or a bad tournament, picks their worst shot, and does an analysis showing how poor their technique is and states that this is why they missed the cut, or lost the tournament, or hit the odd bad shot. Of course, he knows beforehand that the shot…

Swing Analysis: Scott, McIlroy, and Stricker Hit the 100 Yd. Wedge

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I thought this was a fairly rare occurrence, with 3 of the best players in the world playing together and hitting almost the same shot on the same hole, while the cameraman actually does a nice job of positioning himself for a down the line shot of each one. Stricker is a recognized maestro with the wedges, and here we see an example of his relatively wrist-less technique. Scott has beautiful lines and a slightly fuller action, while McIlroy seems to take a bigger cut at it and yet brings the ball in lower than the other two. All 3…

McIlroy, Rose, Oosthuezin, Schwartzel, and Donald Battle in Dubai

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

You know it’s a good tournament if these 5 studs are battling it out in the end. I caught the last 5 holes on DVR and grabbed some interesting shots to look at. Here I make some random observations of various shots, including some putts and short game shots, hit by the 5 protagonists coming down the stretch. Of course, McIlroy birdied every one of the last 5 holes to win, but it’s always cool to watch everything that’s going on with the guys fighting for the lead.

Swing Analysis: Tiger and Rory at the Barclays

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

With Tiger and Rory playing together at the Barclays there were a number of holes where they hit similar shots on camera. Here we look at an iron shot on the par 5 7th, after hitting drives of 330 (Tiger) and 335 (Rory). The camera angles are quite similar, so we get a nice chance to compare their swings. What we see are two very different methods to hit the ball long and straight, while noting some similarities as well. They are the two most charismatic and interesting players alive, and being able to study their swings in detail is…

Hand Movement From the Top of the Swing: A Look at the Top 20 Golf Players in the World Rankings

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

The entire purpose of this video is to record observations of a particular part of the swing as practiced by the top 20 players (according to the “World Rankings”). Too many acceptable variations are castigated by TV announcers who have not done their homework when it comes to knowing what the best players do. Video swing analysis is a powerful tool when it comes to teaching a player how to improve his or her swing.

TV Golf Announcers Just Make Stuff Up: Rory McIlroy

By Wayne | Videos: As Seen On TV and Extras

In this video you will see proof of what I have been saying for some time now, namely that when announcers (any of them) describe why a Tour player sends a shot awry they are making it up. The point is that the actual reasons a shot by a great player is missed are so small and fast that they are simply not seeable, even with a slow motion camera, unless there is time to do a side by side comparison with computer graphics of swings from identical angles and lies.
