Rory and DJ Demonstrate Power off the Tee

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson put on an awesome driving exhibition at the recent WGC tournament in Mexico. Here we see them on the same tee box filmed with the same camera, so we can watch and compare how they manage to hit it out there 370 to over 400 yards (it was at 8000 feet elevation, but Kuchar was in the group regularly 50 yards behind). McIlroy has more early movement into his right side and has a huge stretch of his upper body, while DJ gets the same type of stretch with an earlier set of the wrists.…

Rory McIlroy: Demonstrating One of the Secrets to Great Ball Striking

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In comparing Rory’s swing over the past 9 years we see some differences in the backswing, namely the takeaway and the position of the club at the top, but in all the swings we see Rory add posture into impact and follow through and get through the shot with an amount of side bend unattainable by most normal golfers. Rory has always stayed tall in the backswing and usually pulls his right arm a bit behind him as he gets to the top, then dropping the hands slightly back and down before recovering and getting the right arm back in…

How to Play Golf: Fowler, Scott and McIlroy Hit Terrible Shots, Then Recover like Great Players Do

By Wayne | Videos: How To Play Golf

This video focuses on a 3-some of great ball strikers all hitting awful shots on a 225-yard par-3, then utilizing their short games to give them a chance to save par. Fowler leads off by fanning a 5-iron dead right off the top of the grandstand, getting a wonderful break when the ball kicks off the roof into the bunker and onto the upslope of the trap. McIlroy follows with another shot to the right, not as far off line as Fowler, and winds up with a far more difficult position in the bunker. You would figure no way would…

The First Tee Sunday at the Ryder Cup: How the Best Use Routine to Combat Nerves

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

The Ryder Cup is one of the only events where we see some of the best players in the world get introduced and go through their full routine on the first tee. Here I look at how the following players take their turns teeing off in what is probably one of the most pressure packed shots in all of golf: Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Paul Casey, Webb Simpson, Justin Rose, Tiger Woods, Jon Rahm, Tony Finau, Tommy Fleetwood, Phil Mickelson, and Francesco Molinari. I focus on their every movement after they tee up the ball, including practice swings, target focus, number of steps and amount of time to get to the ball and set up, and then time over the ball before they pull the trigger. I think every golfer gets the first tee jitters and watching what these great players do to prepare for their opening tee shots is quite instructive.

Swing Analysis: Rory McIlroy at the 2017 British Open

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Having watched Rory with interest since he emerged as a player to be reckoned with I believe that he has continued to improve his technique and is certainly capable, barring injuries, to go on a run reminiscent of his major championship years. The main item I see is greater hip depth in the backswing, which lessens his tendency to lean forward approaching the top while pulling his right arm behind him.

Swing Analysis: Rory McIlroy-Still Dropping that Head!

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Here we have a nice fixed camera shot of Rory striking an iron on a long par 3, and lo and behold there goes his head dropping copious amounts. Of course, I have always argued that this is a totally natural, athletic and powerful movement causes by the pivot, but you still hear knuckleheads talk about “dipping” being detrimental to the swing. What amazes me the most is how Rory has been spared the ridiculous criticism that was constantly leveled at Tiger Woods for doing the exact same thing.

Swing Analysis: Adam Scott and Rory Mcilroy

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It’s always nice to get swings from the television broadcasts that employ fixed cameras. As we know, any hand held camera precludes the use of drawing lines to see where the movement occurs in the swing because It is impossible to hold a camera perfectly still while filming. Usually at a Tour event the fixed cameras are on tee boxes for obvious reasons, and in this case we have both Scott and Mcilroy teeing it up on a par 3.

Swing Analysis: Rory McIlroy Uses Revamped Swing to Beat Scott in Australia

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Rory McIlroy signaled that he is ready to make a run at returning to #1 by outplaying Adam Scott in the final round of the Australian Open. He used a revamped swing that you will see in the video is what I would consider to be a major improvement to the one that won him 2 majors. I compare those wins to Tiger winning the Masters in 1997 with a swing that would be completely different by the time he won the PGA in 1999. There is a much better understanding now about how a swing needs to function for…

Swing Analysis: The 18th at Merion: McIlroy and Westwood Navigate the Bunker

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

As I was going through my DVR of the 1st round of the U.S. Open I was reminiscing about my own play there in the 1981 championship, and I recalled hitting a few practice shots out of the bunker to the right of the 18th green. From the bottom of the bunker I could barely see the top of the wicker basket, and the green was like a tabletop, so anything other than a perfect shot was going to be a bogey, and that on a hole that I was hitting 2-iron or fairway wood to the green for my…
