Lucas Glover Swing Analysis: Ben Hogan Would Love This Swing

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Lucas Glover has always been an excellent ball striker. The former U.S. Open champion has struggled with his putting for a decade, but in the last month has discovered not only a fix, but a method that now puts him at the top of the putting stats, which, along with his long game, has led him to two straight wins on the PGA Tour and has moved him from 146th to 3rd in the Fed Ex Cup standings. If he doesn’t run out of gas, I can see him winning the whole thing, although that would seem like a…

Lesson of the Week: Chris Trotter- Working on Hip Depth

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

“I’m Chris Trotter, I’m a member, just joined a month ago, and this is my first swing analysis for the year. I’m open to more lessons moving forward but would love a general diagnosis and hear suggestions of where I should go from here. About me: I live in San Francisco, I’m 6’2 (225 lbs.) 36 yr. (8 handicap). Average drive: 300 yards Average 8 iron: 165 yards I’ve been playing on and off for years. I’m a hockey player and have tried to keep my swing athletic. I’ve just started taking lessons for the first time ever…

Lesson of the Week: Michael Harris-Working on Set-Up Routine and Posture

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Michael is a professional musician who understands the importance of technique and preparation, and thus was receptive to the idea of using a consistent procedure for achieving proper posture and ball position, both key aspects of consistent ball striking. The side-by-side views of before and after are striking, and most anyone can see the benefits of using a routine to get the “easy” part of the game, the set-up, in order before moving to the hard part, the swing. A new set-up routine may seem too detailed and slow, but after practicing you will find it takes no longer…

Online Lesson: Jaime Gylan PGA- Better Posture Would Help an Already Excellent Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I’ve known Jaime since he was in high school (that was a while ago), and I’m always proud when one of my former students becomes a highly respected teaching professional. Jaime, like I did in my prime, works hard on his game and would like to start seeing better results in his club professional tournaments. He has always had a nice swing, and here I make some simple suggestions to try out to see if we can get it to work better. I put him side by side with Charl Schwartzel, partly because of his grip (I think it’s one…

Online Lesson: Justin Baker- Improved Posture Down the Line, Now Addressing Face On

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

In this video you will see Justin change his posture quite a bit from more erect and heel oriented to one more out over the ball and what I would describe as more “athletic”, with pressure more forward toward the balls of the feet and more bent over from the waist. I like to call this a more “ready” position at address, much like a tennis player waiting for a serve, or a shortstop waiting for the batter to swing, or maybe a runner in a distance race with hundreds of competitors lined up waiting for the gun to go…

Online Lesson: Justin Baker- Focusing on Posture

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Posture has a huge effect on what happens when the player starts to move, and in just about every case where I see a slumped, heel oriented setup I suggest something more athletically angled and “ready”, with the upper body out over the ball and the foot pressure toward the balls of the feet (but not on the toes). I like to see the player bend from the hip joints so that the pelvis has some downward tilt to it, and I use the analogy of just about any sport where the player needs to be able to move quickly…

Online Lesson: Bill Stanford- the Influence of Posture on Everything

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Online Lesson: Bill Stanford- the Influence of Posture on Everything Hi Wayne, my continued quest to be better at golf continues. I played off a handicap of 3 always wanted to get down to scratch but could never manage to do it. Lots of issues in my swing but perhaps we can work on getting these corrected. Over the years my best score has been 67. The consistency however has never been there. I would love to be better and will work hard to try and get there. Not young anymore but still feel strong enough. I’m 58 years old.…

Lesson of the Week: Peter Slaven- Right Forearm Takeaway and Centering Setup

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Peter had a nice summer of competition and in this lesson, we continue to try to improve his ball striking by simplifying some important elements of his swing. Peter’s main issue has been the odd hook that occurs less frequently now but still pops up at inopportune times. I see him getting his right arm too deep at the top of the swing and then moving his head back away from the target (as opposed to the more common issue of backing away from the ball). In our last lesson I encouraged Pete to load more to the right early…

Online Lesson: Phil Pfeiffer- Still Trying to Create More Posture

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

If you go back and look at some of Phil’s previous lessons, you will see that he has improved his swing quite a bit. There a couple things I focus on here, including bracing in the right foot better and adding a bit of wrist cock to the backswing, but the main idea is to create more bend in the waist and upper body in both the backswing and the forward swing. If you start with a fairly erect posture as Phil does you are going to need to add bend in the backswing and in the forward swing. This…

Rory McIlroy: Demonstrating One of the Secrets to Great Ball Striking

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In comparing Rory’s swing over the past 9 years we see some differences in the backswing, namely the takeaway and the position of the club at the top, but in all the swings we see Rory add posture into impact and follow through and get through the shot with an amount of side bend unattainable by most normal golfers. Rory has always stayed tall in the backswing and usually pulls his right arm a bit behind him as he gets to the top, then dropping the hands slightly back and down before recovering and getting the right arm back in…
