Swing Analysis: Matt Kuchar’s Radical Swing Change

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

[wlvar_Upgrade]   So how do you stay under the radar with a swing change as radical as what these videos show Matt Kuchar has implemented? Easy: you just have to be almost a superstar (but not quite), relatively uninteresting in the personal gossip column, and you have to just not tell anyone what you are up to. I would be fascinated to talk to Matt about what he has done with his swing and why, but suffice it to say that I believe it is a great move on his part and gives him an opportunity to become one of…

Swing Analysis: Tom Pernice

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Tom Pernice is easily one of the best ball strikers on the Champions Tour, and I don’t hold it against him that he has worked for years with Jim Hardy. As I have said in the past, I have nothing against what Hardy teaches, although I would treat the movement of the right arm in the swing completely differently than what Hardy espouses in his books and clinics. My problem with Hardy is his use of Ben Hogan to demonstrate his idea of right arm action, that is that the right arm stays up and back in transition while the…

Swing Analysis: Jason Kokrak

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

There seem to be more and more guys like Kokrak playing their way onto the Tour, extra- large physically while being technically sound with a fluid motion that produces what appears to be effortless power. I really like his posture at address, and I will show this to students to demonstrate an athletic stance, ready for action with the weight out onto the balls of the feet.

Swing Analysis: Kevin Streelman

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I think this is one of the best swings on Tour right now. Of course, I am biased toward the technique characteristics that I like to teach, but hey, this is all just my opinion anyway. The one thing that Kevin does that I would say is a flaw that he needs to work on, the up and under move with the hips, is the very thing that Kevin and his coach highlight in a video they did at a Trackman seminar. In the swings here, while not perfect angles or completely stable, still show that Kevin has a tendency…

Swing Analysis: Boo Weekley

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Boo is one of the more interesting characters on the PGA Tour, and his swing demonstrates quite a few things that I like to focus on when teaching players of all levels. A couple of things that I would probably not teach (but wouldn’t change in player of Weekley’s caliber) are his strong grip and his locked elbow address position. He uses both to his advantage, however, and winds up with one of the strongest impact positions in golf.   In many cases with normal (non-tour) players the tight arms and pinched right arm backswing result in the right arm…

Swing Analysis: Inbee Park

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This swing is really a tale of two halves when it comes to what I prefer in a golf swing, the first half (backswing) being nothing like I would teach, while the second half (transition and forward swing) has a ton of what I like. Of course, she is winning practically every tournament she plays in, so my observations are not a criticism but rather an analysis based on what I usually consider technique items that I would teach pretty much any player.   I am a big fan of Tour Tempo, John Novosel’s book based around a remarkably simple…

Swing Analysis: CPC (PNC) Champion Rod Perry

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Club pros play in a different league than do touring pros, but the demands of the game do not change. The shots still have to be hit, the course navigated, and the only difference is that the players in the field as a whole are not quite as good overall as the players in a tour event. That said, you can only beat the people you are playing against, so the fact that your winning score might have finished 30th if it were a Tour event is meaningless. I won this very tournament on this course, and I played in…

Swing Analysis: Right Arm Action: Drive it in or Leave it back?

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In this video I take a look at the way the right arm functions in different players, and discuss my reasons for preferring one method over the other. We start with Tiger Woods and Henrik Stenson, both of whom have great looking lines in their swings when watching from down the line. There is a major difference, however, in the way they use their right arm in during the swing to produce those lines. Stenson flares his arm in the backswing (as I would prefer and as I teach) but then leaves it back when the body changes direction so…

Swing Analysis: Scott, McIlroy, and Stricker Hit the 100 Yd. Wedge

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I thought this was a fairly rare occurrence, with 3 of the best players in the world playing together and hitting almost the same shot on the same hole, while the cameraman actually does a nice job of positioning himself for a down the line shot of each one. Stricker is a recognized maestro with the wedges, and here we see an example of his relatively wrist-less technique. Scott has beautiful lines and a slightly fuller action, while McIlroy seems to take a bigger cut at it and yet brings the ball in lower than the other two. All 3…

Swing Analysis: Joe Durant

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Joe is year in and year out is statistically one of the best, if not the best, ball strikers on any tour. That being the case, we can easily surmise that his putting is not up to Tour standards, and the rest of his short game may be suspect as well, although pitching, chipping, bunker and wedge play can also be undone by poor putting. Here we focus on what Joe is best at, swinging the club, and we find a number of things that stand out, starting with his weak grip. The one to one –and- a -half knuckle…
