There aren’t very many available swing videos of Venturi, but the ones I present here are some of my all- time favorites, not surprising when you consider that his swing was about the closest to Hogan that you will find. The startling difference in the takeaways of the two iron swings shown here show a conscious swing change that I would love to ask Venturi about.

We all know that Calvin Peete was one of the most accurate drivers of the golf ball who ever played the game. We probably have some memory of Peete’s swing, a bit odd looking due to a poorly set broken arm as a youth, but the main memory is of a ball rolling down the fairway. It was a long par 3 (at least back in 1983 you could call it long at 205 yards) at Rio Pinar CC in Orlando, as I stood on the tee with my old college roommate John Salamone and John’s buddy from Rochester, Jeff Sluman. It is length that defines John Daly, be it the length he hits the golf ball or the length of his swing, which is about as long a swing that has ever won a major championship. Daly exhibits massive talent every time he hits the ball, not so much for his prodigious drives but for the wedge shots he hits with the club fully 2 feet past parallel. You know it’s a good tournament if these 5 studs are battling it out in the end. I caught the last 5 holes on DVR and grabbed some interesting shots to look at. Here I make some random observations of various shots, including some putts and short game shots, hit by the 5 protagonists coming down the stretch. Of course, McIlroy birdied every one of the last 5 holes to win, but it’s always cool to watch everything that’s going on with the guys fighting for the lead.
