Swing Analysis: Crossing the Line

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Here I take two of my younger students who both cross the line at the top of the swing and show how I try to get them more on plane at the top. Both Joey and Zach are strong hitters who generate a lot of club speed, but both tend to lift their arms at the top and cross the line quite a bit. They are also similar in that they tend to be overly late with their release into the ball with their fairway woods and drivers, which makes it difficult to control the clubface through the ball. Joey…

TP&C: Swing Analysis: Hallberg and Mast Both Top 11 in Canada Champions Tour Event

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

After working with both Dick and Gary last week, Dick face to face at Woodmont and Gary online, both had nice finishes in the Champions Tour event in Canada, Gary finishing 8th and winning over $50,000 and Dick finishing 11th and winning $38,000. Here I go over some of the things we have been working on in general and look at their most recent swings.

Online Students: Chris Ellis

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Chris is a good example of great instincts impeded by poor mechanics. Chris’ backswing is fraught with problems, but his forward swing recovers nicely and finds an approach worthy of a top notch player. Watching this I couldn’t help but think that if Chris could clean up some of the major issues in the first half of his swing that he could really come up with some good ball striking. Usually players have to pay more attention to the downswing than the backswing, but I think in this case it will be far more beneficial in the short and long…

U.S. Senior Open Qualifier: Good Start, Bad Finish

By Wayne | blog

It’s always nice to start a tournament round with a couple of birdies, like I did at the Arcola Country Club course in New Jersey for the U.S. Senior Open qualifier. It’s never nice to end with a couple of bogies, like I did at the end of the round on holes 16 and 17, which took me out of a playoff at 72 and left me driving home with nothing to show for my efforts. The course was quite challenging, over 100 years old with fast poa annua greens, juicy rough and tight green surrounds. I was not able…

Swing Analysis: Webb Simpson, 2012 U.S. Open Champ

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Webb utilizes quite a few of the swing techniques that I talk about in my teaching and on my website, but he also does quite a few things that differ from what I prefer. I will let you watch to video to find out what those things are, but one really interesting item in his swing that I just noticed is the movement of the right heel toward the target at the start of the downswing, part of a very interesting and quirky use of the pivot and the right leg and hip especially in the forward swing. As I…

Heading to Senior U.S. Open Qualifier, Then the PGA Professional National Championship

By Wayne | blog

If you’re wondering why I haven’t been commenting on the U.S. Open this week it’s because I am swamped with lessons, family, and trying to prepare for a big week and a half of golf, with the US Senior Open Monday in New Jersey and the PNC (formerly known as the CPC) to be played out in Seaside, California at the Bayonet and Blackhorse courses. I have always opted, when given a choice, to play and practice my own game instead of sitting inside and watching, even when it’s something as compelling as this week’s US Open. I have just…

Student Lesson: Mark Long

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Mark has a ton of experience with great players as he has been a Tour caddy for over 20 years. He has seen them all and been right next to most of them, but as you can see his swing does not reflect what he knows he would like to do. The big problem areas have been the same for years: his backswing gets vertical and lifted, while his downswing gets majorly steep and exits way out to the right. I had a feeling that the stuff I was working on and teaching in my day to day lessons and…

Online Students: Rob Kane

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I think it is so cool to be able to try to help someone from the other side of the world. Just thinking about the advances in technology over the last decade can make your head spin. Rob is from England, and here we see a classic right arm action issue, one that if you have watched a bunch of these lesson videos you find crops up quite often. Rob has a bunch of good stuff happening in his swing, and does a great job of returning the shaft pretty darn close to the original shaft plane on his approach…

Swing Analysis: Tiger at the Memorial 2012

By Wayne | Videos: As Seen On TV and Extras

So you tell me: how cool is it to hear Peter Kostis and Gary McCord talking about “compressing into the ground” during both the backswing and the forward swing? I have to think that there’s no way they are not watching my videos. I know Peter is for sure, because my head pro told me Peter was pissed at me for calling him out in a few of my previous videos. If that’s the case then I say OK, because that bit on Tiger on Sunday was the best thing Kostis has done maybe ever. My goal all along is…
