TP&C: Len Mattiace Part 4

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

As you know, golf lessons are voluntary, and the player is never obligated to return for more instruction, nor is there any expectation that there will be any explanation (if the student does not return) as to why the choice was to discontinue the work. A teacher’s career is filled with students who start up with a lesson or two, then disappear for reasons unknown. When it comes to the highest level of player there has to be some measure of success or at least the belief that things are moving in the right direction in order for the player…

Swing Analysis: Nancy Lopez

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Wow. This is one wild swing. Nancy won 48 LPGA Tour events and 3 majors while having three children, and is one of the best women golfers of the past 30 years. You certainly wouldn’t guess that if all you had to go on was the swing, which is one of the most idiosyncratic great player swings you will ever see. It just goes to show you that the greatest attribute any player can have is talent, as it is obvious that talent and a great touch around the greens can equal an exceptional career. There is always the question…

Swing Analysis: Graham Delaet

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Graham Delaet is not particularly young at age 30, but he is relatively new as a player on the world stage, recently having his best finish (T-2 at the Barclay’s) and qualifying (and playing quite well in the event) for the international President’s Cup team. While it is true that he hasn’t won an event yet (he has 3 wins on the Canadian Tour and one in South Africa) his ball striking statistics are exemplary, and that makes his swing compelling enough to take a closer look.   We see a number of interesting things in Delaet’s set up and…

Playing for Money: Jeremy Wells

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Jeremy’s swing keeps getting better, and our hope is that better ball striking will lead to some check cashing down on the mini-tours in Florida this winter and moving forward. As you can see (and have seen in our videos before) Jeremy has excellent action and produces a nice line of compression at impact, but his accuracy and consistency have been a little off, and at Q-School 1st stage the erratic ball striking led to him missing by a few despite a fine 67 in the final round.   At this level the changes are going to be fairly subtle…

TP&C: Ben Silverman Part 4

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Ben has been playing some excellent golf lately, but he is on board with continually trying to improve his swing for the long term even with Web.Com Q-School 2nd stage coming up in a few weeks. One reason he is OK with working on new stuff is that he has been able to incorporate what we do and play well almost immediately. We haven’t had any issues where a lesson or a different thought caused problems with his game. Another reason is that I am very consistent with the type of swing action I want Ben to use and when…

Johnny Miller Thinks Steve Stricker has the Swing of the Future

By Wayne | Videos: As Seen On TV and Extras

Steve Stricker has had an amazing year considering he pared back his schedule a huge amount, only playing in 13 events but winning over $4 million dollars with four second place finishes and a bunch of other good results eventually qualifying for the President’s Cup team, which he played in instead of going on a long planned hunting trip. He played great golf again in the President’s Cup, and it is here that we have Johnny discussing Steve’s swing, suggesting that it is the one that young players should be emulating. His reasoning is, as usual, fairly simplistic and not…

Online Students: Chris Mauer

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Chris’ swing is one more example of good lines and excellent sequence and motion being compromised by lack of pivot depth. If you are wondering why I call my general teaching method the “Pivot Compression Golf Swing” it is because there are so many swings that fail to approach their potential due to substandard body movement. Chris does a great job with his aggressive tempo and great rhythm, and for the most part keeps the club right on plane until the approach to impact, where his lack of hip depth causes his arms and hands to come in high and…

My Beef with Brandel: Article on Golfwrx

By Wayne | blog

I’ll be writing an occasional article for Golfwrx. An excerpt of the most recent one is below and links to the full article are included too. DeFrancesco: My beef with Brandel, and why I criticize TV announcers After reading through the GolfWRX forum thread “Brandel Chamblee Says Some Idiotic Things” (http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/815743-brandel-chamblee-says-idiotic-things-ongoing-thread/ ) and seeing my name come up multiple times I thought I might take a moment to explain why I take the time to challenge Chamblee in video commentary available on my website. It is important to note that, at least in my mind, I did not pick this…

Justin Rose Makes an Odd Looking Practice Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I was watching with curiosity the play at the recent Barclay’s championship where Justin Rose played excellent golf but lost after 3 putting the 18th hole from 20 feet. He repeatedly made rehearsal swings that had his hands dropping not just straight down but backwards, and did so without much leg movement. The move was pretty much exactly the opposite of what Tiger Woods was doing earlier in the year when he was rehearsing an exaggerated “hands out” move from the top, swing the club well left past impact and looking like he was trying to hit a big looping…

Online Students: Stuart Hoare

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is a good one to watch as there are some essential items that we go over that I think will really help Stuart’s swing, starting with his balance and posture at address. Stuart sets up with his knees flexed towards the target and a lot of space between the back of his butt and his heels, and as his swing unfolds this has a tremendous impact on the entire ensuing pattern. He demonstrates almost a perfect takeaway, but as the hands reach the top of his swing his arms collapse somewhat, indicating that his “extensor action”, or the feeling…
