Bryson DeChambeau vs. Jack Nicklaus – Side by Side Observations

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It seems like an obvious comparison to make between the two power hitters, Bryson the new U.S. Open champ and Nicklaus of course the Greatest of All Time with 18 majors.  Both exhibit the wide arced backswing and tremendous windup you would expect, along with a perfectly sequenced transition and free release through impact.  They differ greatly at address as Nicklaus utilizes relaxed, hanging arms while Bryson has his arms famously extended almost in line with his shaft and elbows locked.  In watching them side by side we see elements of what may be called a more classic swing versus…

Payne Stewart Swing Analysis: Old School Swing Should Have Led to a Long Career

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Payne Stewart would be 63 (born January 30, 1957) had he not tragically died in a plane crash when he was 42 years old. His golf swing was a throwback to the days of Bobby Jones when any thought of restriction was nonexistent. Payne had more backswing hip turn and more total lateral movement (off the ball in the backswing, then forward in the downswing) than anyone on the PGA Tour today. In fact, no one is even close. You hear many words and phrases to describe great rhythm and tempo such as “fluid” or “syrupy” , “smooth”, effortless” etc.,…

86 Major Championship Winners: Left Wrist Position at the Top of the Backswing

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

With seemingly more players winning on the PGA Tour with flat to bowed left wrist angles at the top I thought it would be interesting to go through my accumulated model swings to see how all the major winners I have film of looked at that position. I counted 86 major champions (I stuck to only the men) from Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen up to Collin Morikawa and Bryson DeChambeau. Here is what I found. One note of importance, and I will go over this in the video, is my opinion of what these categories of wrist positions look…

Bryson DeChambeau Pitching: The Short Game Technique that Helped Win the U.S. Open

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I know you were expecting another look at Bryson’s swing, but I thought I would do something a bit different after watching him get it up and down over and over at Winged Foot. Here we see two pitch shots, one from an angle well outside the ball and one from directly down the line, which illustrate how Bryson uses a smaller version of the body movement he utilizes in his full swing to hit these short pitches. I constantly hear advice from instructors to “keep the legs quiet” when pitching, but here we can see that Bryson does not…

Matthew Wolff Swing Analysis: A Detailed Look at an Unconventional but Highly Effective Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

We have been seeing Matthew Wolff a lot these days due to his stellar play, and his odd-looking swing has gotten more familiar. There is, however, a lot going on from start to finish from the time he triggers his swing with his signature “impact fix” his to his unique club path and into his wild footwork as he impacts the ball. Here I take a close look at the subtle movements within the obvious idiosyncrasies, movements that all add up to a ball striking machine.

Jim Herman Swing Analysis: 3 Tour Wins with Not So Great Stats

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

When I do swing analysis of a Tour winner (Herman won the 2020 Wyndham Championship) I like to get on PGATour.com and check out his stats, not just for this year but for his entire Tour career. Herman’s stats were a big surprise: in 11 years he has made the top 125 just 4 times with a best of 42nd in 2016, winning just over $2 million, while in 2018 he won just $46 K. Looking at his overall stats the numbers aren’t particularly good: decent driver of the ball but his strokes gained everywhere else (approach, around the green,…

Louie Oosthuizen Swing Analysis: Revered Swing- Underperforming Career

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

After winning the British Open by 7 shots in 2010 everyone figured that Louie would be a top 10 performer and multiple major winner. He has finished 2nd in all 4 majors, which is a feat, but that Open Championship is the only PGA Tour win he has ever had, and that’s with over 180 starts. He is quite consistent year to year (he’s played in 4 President’s Cups) and has amassed earnings of over $20 million, but you must wonder why he hasn’t won more. His swing is one of the most aesthetically pleasing in all of golf. He…

Collin Morikawa Swing Analysis: Great Pivot Movement and Left Wrist Flexion Add Up to an Awesome Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

If you watched the tournament at Muirfield Village last week you know that Collin Morikawa is the real deal, as great ball striking and putting put him over the top against another excellent young player, Justin Thomas. In this video (thanks to my friends at TaylorMade) we get perfect camera angles of an iron swing from both face on and down the line. There are many things of note on display: his grip is unconventional to say the least, his left hand weak but with the thumb positioned to the far right of the grip, while his right hand is…

Jordan Spieth Pitching: Video for Tony Romo

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos: Swing Analysis

Back in January of 2018 I played in the Isleworth Invitational, partnering with Tony Romo. Tony had been playing quite a bit with Jordan Spieth, and we had a great time practicing on the fabulous short game area at the club with me showing Tony some things and Tony sharing with me some of Spieth’s secrets to his amazing pitching game. I had recorded Spieth off a couple of televised events, focusing on his short game, one of which was the Hero World Challenge, also at Isleworth, where Spieth blitzed the field while shooting an incredible 26 under par (Isleworth…

Tyrell Hatton: Swing Analysis

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

You’ve got to love watching Tyrell Hatton play golf. It is so obvious that he feels the way we all feel when we are out on the links battling the game, the elements, our own thoughts, our unsure technique. Watching him win at Bay Hill made me feel like I shared his triumph, just like when Tiger won the Masters last year. He has an interesting swing, nothing like what I would prefer, as he gains no depth in his right hip and leans out toward the ball as he approaches the top of his swing. However, he has great…
