Wayne D Swing Analysis: Back Swinging 10 Months After Back Surgery- Working on Over the Top from the Inside

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

The truth is that I didn’t know if this day would ever come, but after what seemed like forever the pain finally subsided to the point where I can make full swings.  There isn’t a lot of speed and there is a lot to work on, but to say I’m happy about just being out hitting balls again is an understatement.  I’ve never wanted to be a teacher who didn’t try to play or at least work on his/her own game, and thankfully that fear has not come to be.  I know to be conscious of when to stop so…

Swing Analysis Abraham Ancer: Getting Better on his Own

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Watching Ancer win in Memphis a few weeks ago it appeared to me right away that his position at the top of his swing had changed quite a bit, with the club now pointed much more left.  I wondered who he had been working with to facilitate this change, but I soon found out via an interview he did with one of the magazines that he does not have, and has never had, a swing coach.  I happen to think that’s awesome, because that’s exactly how I played my entire career, doing it myself.  I’m not sure how he goes…

Garrick Higgo Swing Analysis: Study This Rhythm and Tempo

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

I was surprised at what I saw after slowing Higgo’s swing down and analyzing it closer because it looks so good at full speed due to the smoothness of his swing with every club.  He is not a huge guy at 6 feet and 185 pounds and watching him make his seemingly effortless move into the ball you might not expect him to be in the top 20 in driving distance on the Euro Tour, but there he is averaging over 310 yards and still ranking in the top 40 in greens in regulation.  Combine that with some other-worldly putting…

Richard Bland Swing Analysis- How Did This Guy Not Win in 477 Tournaments?

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

When you read a bio of Richard Bland and see that he got on Tour in 1998 and didn’t win until 2021, then you watch his swing, you must wonder what in the world kept him out of the winner’s circle.  Of course, there are as many reasons why players fail to win as there are facets of the game, and who knows what has bedeviled him in the past.  But he had his breakthrough win last month at the British Masters, and now is tied for the lead in the U.S. Open after 36 holes.  His swing is spot…

Mac O’Grady and the Magic Move of the Greats

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Recently a bunch of Mac swings were posted on YouTube, and I encourage everyone to check out his action to see how it changed over time.  It was always a great swing, and his ball-striking abilities are legendary.  He is also known for his knowledge of swing mechanics and just about any other subject regarding the game, but his eccentricities have kept him from rising above the cult status that he currently possesses (although I’m sure he could care less).  In this video I take a Mac swing from down the line that demonstrates what I consider to be the…

Tiger Woods 2000: Why I Teach What I Teach

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Sometimes I download swings onto my computer and forget about them, which is what happened with these swings of Tiger taken at Butch Harmon’s teaching center in Dubai in 2000.  What’s rare about them is the stable camera and the correct camera angles, which are hard to come by unless you are one of the few who have worked with Tiger over the years.  These are especially valuable as they come from Tiger at the top of his game and considering his amazing career that is saying something.  In this video, I look at the Tiger’s swing in detail and…

Lydia Ko Swing Analysis: Added Strength and Getting Back on Plane Leads to Big Victory

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Lydia Ko was a prodigy to say the least.  She was #1 in the world at age 17 and had 2 majors under her belt along with 15 tour wins before she was 20.  A few years later she found herself in golf never-never land, going through swing coaches and caddies in search of the missing magic.  She only won once in 90 events before breaking through with a 2nd in the latest women’s major and followed that up with a 7-shot win.  Much credit goes to her new instructor Sean Foley, who essentially got her back to what she…

Matt Jones Swing Analysis: Classic Positions with Quiet Lower Body

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

At age 40 Matt Jones will admit that he has had an up and down PGA Tour career marked by streaks of good play (2013 to 2015) and not so good play (2016-2018), but for the most part he is a solid grinder who has played in an average of 24 PGA Tour events a year since 2008, finishing in the top 125 in half those years and amassing over $15 million in earnings.  Coming off a missed cut and a T-55 in his last 2 events Jones was probably approaching the Honda Classic with a “see what happens” attitude,…

Lesson of the Week: John Lamendola- Working on Not Backing Up and Slowing Backswing Tempo

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week , Videos: Online Students , Videos: Swing Analysis

John has made great strides with his swing over the years we have been working together (mostly online) but now that he has acquired a place in Florida, we have had a couple of in person lessons in which I have been able to get John to feel things that not hard to mention and explain online but are not easy to feel without some hands on, face to face work.  Here we find John’s head backing well away from its original position as he arrives at impact, and to get him to feel what it’s like to stay out…

Patrick Reed Swing Analysis: Swing Changes Simplify Release Action

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis , Videos: This Week On Tour

The story from the TV announcers during the Torrey Pines event was that Patrick Reed had begun working with David Leadbetter and that Reed was getting accustomed to the swing changes.  He was a bit vague about what they were working on, but he did mention trying to get his hands to release more in tandem with his body.  Reed in the past has played with a cupped left wrist and an extremely open face well into the downswing, but his genius in squaring the face without much if any lateral hip movement is obvious.  In the new swing it…
