Hideki Matsuyama Swing Analysis: Success Through Ball Striking

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Hideki Matsuyama doesn’t get nearly enough credit for being the ball striking machine that he is. He has amassed an amazing record in 8 years on Tour with over 36 million dollars of earnings, 7 PGA Tour victories, and, of course, last year’s Masters, all while never ranking above 78th in strokes gained putting, and indeed ranking worse than 150th in 4 of his 8 years. How is that possible, you might wonder? Just look at his ball striking stats: his rankings in strokes gained tee to green read like this- 2014-4th, 2015-7th, 2016-6th, 2017-3rd, 2018-15th, 2019-3rd, 2020-2nd, 2021-15th. In…

Lucas Herbert Swing Analysis: Strong and Athletic but Loose in Transition

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Don’t get me wrong here when I say “loose in transition”: I normally use the term “catchy” or “whippy” to describe a swing that puts a large amount of stress on the handle in transition (Herbert is built like a fullback) while the wrists are allowed to bend as the club reaches the top and changes direction, and being a Hogan lover I have no problem with this type of action. Herbert happens to be one of the best putters on the planet, and when he can find his tee shots (he averages 311 yds off the tee and is…

Online Lesson: Sam Rottie- Teaching Professional Looking for Swing Guidance

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Hi Wayne, I like the swing analysis video’s you post on YouTube and need some inspiration for myself… so here to give it a go. I’m a teaching pro myself who still loves to be competitive. My level is around scratch best score is -4 but i struggle with being consistent, main shot is a draw, curious to see what you make of it. Cheers Sam I always enjoy helping professionals with their swing, especially teaching pros who like to compete, as I know that if I can give them something to improve both their knowledge and their technique, they…

Lesson of the Week: John Lamendola- The Process Continues

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

John took his first online lesson in June of 2015, and 6 years later he is still looking to swing and play better. His improvement over that period is substantial, which would explain why he still trusts me to comment on what he is doing and thinking. Golf is a lonely sport, and it can overrun your brain if you don’t have someone to bounce things off. John has been playing for a long time but just recently has raised his game to the level where he is competitive with the best amateurs. Looking at his swing over the years…

OTTFTI: Over the Top from the Inside- Great Players who used an Outward Hand Path Combined with a Shallowing Shaft

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Over the course of my playing career, I have struggled with posture, hip depth, and left side clearing, due partially to growing up in an era where “down the line” and “stay behind the ball” were paramount swing ideas and due to my constant lower back issues, that made staying bent over and rotating with speed a difficult proposition.  I am 64 now and just about recovered from my 5th major spine surgery, a 2-level fusion which is on top of another 2-level fusion I had in 1986, and I still feel that I have a chance to swing the…

Wayne D Swing Analysis: Back Swinging 10 Months After Back Surgery- Working on Over the Top from the Inside

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

The truth is that I didn’t know if this day would ever come, but after what seemed like forever the pain finally subsided to the point where I can make full swings.  There isn’t a lot of speed and there is a lot to work on, but to say I’m happy about just being out hitting balls again is an understatement.  I’ve never wanted to be a teacher who didn’t try to play or at least work on his/her own game, and thankfully that fear has not come to be.  I know to be conscious of when to stop so…

Online Lesson: John Daly Sr.- Backswing Forearm Rotation and More Aggressive Lower Body

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

At first glance my impression of John’s swing was that the hesitation at the beginning of the swing would have to be smoothed out so that he could get to more of the 3:1 rhythm that most top players use.  However, more and more we see players on television who take the club away much slower, and sometimes with the same type of pausing as John uses, and since John has the club traveling on almost perfectly on plane, I decided to leave that alone.  The two major things I discuss are the setup posture where I would like him…

Swing Analysis Abraham Ancer: Getting Better on his Own

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Watching Ancer win in Memphis a few weeks ago it appeared to me right away that his position at the top of his swing had changed quite a bit, with the club now pointed much more left.  I wondered who he had been working with to facilitate this change, but I soon found out via an interview he did with one of the magazines that he does not have, and has never had, a swing coach.  I happen to think that’s awesome, because that’s exactly how I played my entire career, doing it myself.  I’m not sure how he goes…

Online Lesson: Chris Feltman- Better Posture Would Help Overdriving Lower Body

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Hey Wayne, hope all is well.  I’m looking for advice mainly for the driver, but I’ll gladly take any feedback you have for the iron swing as well.  I’m striking the ball fairly solid almost always, but it seems like I have little to no control over the clubface at times.  I’m probably losing 2-3 golf balls off the tee ON AVERAGE at my home course and it makes it difficult to score.  I’ve tried getting less right bend/swinging easier with the driver. It looks prettier, but I still spray it all over.  Maybe I was approaching it the wrong…

Online Lesson: Dan Daly-Suggestions to Help a Good Swing

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Dan is obviously a strong young man and a good athlete, and he already has a nice swing, but as in almost every case there are a few things that I believe could benefit his consistency. My first bit of advice is to try to maintain constant grip pressure just before the takeaway.  Having the grip reset as a trigger can be problematic as it won’t always end up in the same place.  Dan has some excessive hip slide to the right in the backswing, and while I like right -loading I’d like to see him square up his right…
