Max Homa Swing Analysis: Classic Form Begs to be Emulated

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

There is nothing about this swing that you wouldn’t want to copy, even if you don’t have Max’s 32-year-old, 6’2”, 180 lb. body (my guess is that he has put on 20 more pounds of muscle since the PGA Tour did his profile).  Everything about this is quality, from the grip to the stance and posture, and then to the effortless looking swing that produces average drives of 306 yards. A few things that are a bit different from what I might teach are the locked looking arms at address and the lack of rightward head movement in the backswing,…

Sam Burns Swing Analysis: Long off the Tee, Solid Ball Striker, Great Putter

By Wayne D | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Stats don’t lie (usually), and when you average 310 off the tee, are 11th on Tour in Strokes Gained Approaching the Green, and top 10 in Strokes Gained Putting you are going to win a lot of money and put yourself in position to win with some regularity.  Burns shines because unlike other excellent players with great stats he wins more often when he has a chance, three times already this year.  He is a strong looking athlete at 6’1” and 185 lbs., and his swing is good enough to want to copy, utilizing the OTTFTI method of outward hand…

Kevin Na Swing Analysis: Doesn’t Have to be Perfect When You Have the Best Short Game on Tour

By Wayne D | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

I love to watch guys like Na who don’t drive the ball particularly long or straight and aren’t the best ball strikers around but play consistently great golf. After all, the game is about scoring, and Na has been #1 in Strokes Gained Around the Green 3 times in the last 10 years while having solid putting stats. Na is 5’11”, the same as Hideki Matsuyama, but Matsuyama outweighs Na by 30 pounds and is 15 to 20 yards longer off the tee. You might expect Na to be among the most accurate drivers considering his lack of length, but…

Tom Hoge Swing Analysis: Poster Child for Pivot Compression

By Wayne D | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

When I started this website 12 years ago, I called it “The Pivot Compression Golf Swing”, focusing on the fact that most Tour players, and indeed most of the greats from the past, moved downward at some point during the swing and struck the ball with significantly more posture (more bent over) at impact. This idea met with some resistance from TV announcers who thought Tiger’s problems had a lot to do with his lowering, but in recent years it has become not only accepted but encouraged to “use the ground” for stability, power, and timing. There are three categories…

Tiger and Charlie Woods: The Greatest and His Kid

By Wayne D | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

What fun to have Tiger back (I never doubted him) and playing with his 12-year-old son Charlie, whose demeanor on the course would be something for any aspiring professional to emulate. Tiger looks great for a guy on the mend from a bone-crushing car wreck, and when he regains his lower body strength and hip speed, he will still be one of the best on the planet. Charlie is a phenom, but in the video I make a few suggestions that I think might help him going forward, especially when it comes to protecting his spine from the daily torture…

Hideki Matsuyama Swing Analysis: Success Through Ball Striking

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Hideki Matsuyama doesn’t get nearly enough credit for being the ball striking machine that he is. He has amassed an amazing record in 8 years on Tour with over 36 million dollars of earnings, 7 PGA Tour victories, and, of course, last year’s Masters, all while never ranking above 78th in strokes gained putting, and indeed ranking worse than 150th in 4 of his 8 years. How is that possible, you might wonder? Just look at his ball striking stats: his rankings in strokes gained tee to green read like this- 2014-4th, 2015-7th, 2016-6th, 2017-3rd, 2018-15th, 2019-3rd, 2020-2nd, 2021-15th. In…

Lucas Herbert Swing Analysis: Strong and Athletic but Loose in Transition

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Don’t get me wrong here when I say “loose in transition”: I normally use the term “catchy” or “whippy” to describe a swing that puts a large amount of stress on the handle in transition (Herbert is built like a fullback) while the wrists are allowed to bend as the club reaches the top and changes direction, and being a Hogan lover I have no problem with this type of action. Herbert happens to be one of the best putters on the planet, and when he can find his tee shots (he averages 311 yds off the tee and is…

Swing Analysis Abraham Ancer: Getting Better on his Own

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Watching Ancer win in Memphis a few weeks ago it appeared to me right away that his position at the top of his swing had changed quite a bit, with the club now pointed much more left.  I wondered who he had been working with to facilitate this change, but I soon found out via an interview he did with one of the magazines that he does not have, and has never had, a swing coach.  I happen to think that’s awesome, because that’s exactly how I played my entire career, doing it myself.  I’m not sure how he goes…

Garrick Higgo Swing Analysis: Study This Rhythm and Tempo

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

I was surprised at what I saw after slowing Higgo’s swing down and analyzing it closer because it looks so good at full speed due to the smoothness of his swing with every club.  He is not a huge guy at 6 feet and 185 pounds and watching him make his seemingly effortless move into the ball you might not expect him to be in the top 20 in driving distance on the Euro Tour, but there he is averaging over 310 yards and still ranking in the top 40 in greens in regulation.  Combine that with some other-worldly putting…

Richard Bland Swing Analysis- How Did This Guy Not Win in 477 Tournaments?

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

When you read a bio of Richard Bland and see that he got on Tour in 1998 and didn’t win until 2021, then you watch his swing, you must wonder what in the world kept him out of the winner’s circle.  Of course, there are as many reasons why players fail to win as there are facets of the game, and who knows what has bedeviled him in the past.  But he had his breakthrough win last month at the British Masters, and now is tied for the lead in the U.S. Open after 36 holes.  His swing is spot…
