TP&C: Ben Silverman Part 6

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Ben has been doing nicely on the Canadian Tour with a top 20 and a top 10 in his first two events, but he missed the cut last week and sent me a few of his swings. As you will see the swing is looking great going back, but still needs work in transition and in the release. I would like to see Ben keep the cup in his wrist a bit longer in transition and get his hands working more out toward the ball so that the right arm can move more in front of his chest and his…

TP&C: Len Mattiace Part 6

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

If you’ve been following Lenny this year you can see just how difficult it is sometimes when you’re playing pretty good but just not putting things together. Lenny just missed another cut by a shot, shooting a poor 77 in his first round but coming back with a 32 on his second nine for a 69 the second day. We spent 3-4 hours together a week before at Lakewood (where the swings in the video were taken) and I felt like we are getting to the bottom of his ball striking inconsistencies. Lenny is a relentlessly positive guy (you really…

TP&C: Kevin Streelman

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

I had already been working with Kevin a bit online and when he missed the cut at the Open he called me to see if I had some time on the weekend. I did, and we spent the afternoon both Saturday and Sunday going over some new stuff. In addition to the swing stuff you see here we also went over his pitching technique and his putting. He had a tendency to pull his left arm behind him when he hit short to medium pitches, and liked the feeling of driving the right arm and wrist more forward through the…

TP&C: Ben Silverman Part 5

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

This is another installment in my continuing work with young Ben Silverman. Ben missed qualifying for the Web.com last year at 2nd Stage Q-School on the final 9 holes, but has been playing excellent golf since, racking up a number of wins on the Minor League tour and some high finishes on the NGA Tour. He has shown the ability to shoot low scores, having won 2 events with rounds of 63, and his scoring average this year is well down into the 60’s. He is doing all this while working on his swing, and we have a very good…

TP&C: Len Mattiace Part 5

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

After earning exempt status on the Web.Com Tour for 2014 Lenny finished out 2013 with a near miss at the Mayacoba Classic in Mexico, qualifying just to play in the event in a 4-spotter and then making the cut with nice rounds of 69 and 68. He was poised to break into the top 10 with 7 holes to play, but a triple bogey on 12 and two more bogies coming in derailed his chances. In assessing the year Lenny would have liked to have played better, but he had a few top finishes and showed signs of generally better…

TP&C: Len Mattiace Part 4

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

As you know, golf lessons are voluntary, and the player is never obligated to return for more instruction, nor is there any expectation that there will be any explanation (if the student does not return) as to why the choice was to discontinue the work. A teacher’s career is filled with students who start up with a lesson or two, then disappear for reasons unknown. When it comes to the highest level of player there has to be some measure of success or at least the belief that things are moving in the right direction in order for the player…

TP&C: Ben Silverman Part 4

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Ben has been playing some excellent golf lately, but he is on board with continually trying to improve his swing for the long term even with Web.Com Q-School 2nd stage coming up in a few weeks. One reason he is OK with working on new stuff is that he has been able to incorporate what we do and play well almost immediately. We haven’t had any issues where a lesson or a different thought caused problems with his game. Another reason is that I am very consistent with the type of swing action I want Ben to use and when…

TP&C: Brad Faxon

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

A couple weeks ago Kevin Streelman called Brad to ask him for some help with his putting, and Brad, knowing that I had done a swing analysis on Kevin, gave me a call to see if I had spent any time with him. I hadn’t, but we began to discuss teaching in general and eventually I asked Brad how his game was going. We had worked together for a day back in 2010 up in New York, but subsequently Brad decided to work with Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer and has been doing so up until last month. He remembered…

TP&C: Bobby MacWhinnie Parts 1 and 2

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

This is a good example of an excellent player with a good golf swing who is struggling and looking for help. I teach players of all levels, and certainly this swing as is would be way up there with the best I see on any given day. I have to listen to the player describe his or her struggles with ball control and then analyze the swing in a bit more detail in order to come up with ideas about why the ball striking is less than adequate. Proponents of “keep it simple” would more than likely tell Bobby that…
