Thinking About NOT Thinking? THINK AGAIN.

By Wayne | Articles: The Mental Game

“…When you throw a ball to me, without thought, my hands go up and catch it. When a child or animal runs in front of your car, you automatically apply the brakes. When you throw a punch at me, I intercept and hit you back, but without thought. ‘It’ just happens. ‘It’ is the state of mind the Japanese refer to as “mushin,” which literally means “no-mind”. According to Zen masters, mushin is operating when the actor is separate from the act and no thoughts interfere with the action because the unconscious act is the most free and uninhibited. When…

TP&C: Ben Silverman Part 5

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

This is another installment in my continuing work with young Ben Silverman. Ben missed qualifying for the Web.com last year at 2nd Stage Q-School on the final 9 holes, but has been playing excellent golf since, racking up a number of wins on the Minor League tour and some high finishes on the NGA Tour. He has shown the ability to shoot low scores, having won 2 events with rounds of 63, and his scoring average this year is well down into the 60’s. He is doing all this while working on his swing, and we have a very good…

Playing for Money: Jeremy Wells Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Jeremy has moved to the Fort Myers area in Florida and is now playing the mini-tours full time. He has had some success so far, but has struggled a bit with his ball striking while getting acclimated with playing and practicing every day. As you will see Jeremy has a technically sound swing, and in this particular lesson I choose to work on his posture and the flow of his swing instead of anything position oriented. Jeremy has a great build for the game and is a wiry strong guy, but it just appeared to me that he was so…

Lesson of the Week: Rokki Rogan

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

It’s always neat to see major changes in the course of a 2 or so hour lesson, and this one certainly qualifies. Rokki is a high level senior amateur who would like to compete on a national level, but has found himself falling just short of his goals due to erratic ball striking. He had been watching my videos for some time when he met Jeremy Wells, a student of mine who graduated college and is now living in Fort Myers and making his way on the mini-tour with designs to play the PGA Tour. Jeremy encouraged Rokki to accompany…

Swing Analysis: John Cook

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

A swing analysis such as this one is altogether different from a lesson video. John, an old friend dating back to when we spent time together in New York City at the All-American banquet in 1979, was nice enough to come out and hit some shots at the back of the range at Isleworth after we finished the first round of the Isleworth Invitational. John shot a 2-under 70 in spite of a triple bogey 6 on the par 3 11th, and would eventually shoot another 70 and finish second to Nick O’Hern. John has watched some of my swing…

Online Students: Derek Cribb Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I think it would be interesting to go back to watch Derek’s other online lessons either before or after this one to see the progression in the first three and then the bit of regression here in the fourth. Derek reported in that he had been playing and scoring quite well a few months prior to shooting these swings but after getting busy with work and life and not having time to practice or play much had run into a poor stretch of play. In analyzing the swing we see Derek’s usual fluid move and stable lower body from face…

Online Students: Laurent Girouille

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

If you ever wanted proof that perfect tempo does not make a perfect swing this would be it. I counted Laurent’s tempo at 24/8, a perfect 3/1, and yet his mechanics have a lot of room for improvement. Here is an email Laurent sent along with his swings, and as I mention in the video he does a great job of self -diagnosis:   Hi Wayne first I want to mention that I loved your site and really enjoy my weekly dose of video golf analysis :) I few word about me : iam currently around 9hcp and still going…

Swing Analysis: Daniel Summerhays

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Daniel Summerhays has been a professional for 7 years, and actually won his only Tour event (on the Nationwide Tour) as an amateur. He turned pro 2 weeks later and has been grinding out there ever since, having his ups and downs but seemingly hitting his stride a bit in 2013 and the beginning of 2014. From the looks of his swing I would say that unless he is inept around the greens he should become a solid top 20 player with tremendous upside. There just aren’t many players with better action than this. He is another representative of the…

8 Keys for Greater Distance

By Wayne | Articles: Technology, Equipment and Teaching

Everyone who is anyone who talks about golf these days is talking about distance. The question on everyone’s lips is “How far is too far?”, and of course they are talking about how far everyone, it seems, is hitting the ball. I was at one National Club Pro Championship in New Mexico where the driving leader averaged 330 yards, with a long drive of over 390 yards. Even though the event was played at 5000 feet of altitude, those are still some serious numbers. The crazy stats are seen every week now. Give a long hitter a fast fairway and…
