Lesson of the Week: Bruce Gross Part 3

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I’ve had quite a few people suggest that I post more of the hands on work I do with students, so here I include a segment of me trying to get Bruce to feel the timing, amount, and direction of the lower body movement and how his arms should not only trail but aim themselves to approach from more across his body. The instinct to hit at the ball with the upper body moving in front of the lower causing the club to approach from out to in was evident in Bruce’s first batch of swings, but that was to…

Online Students: David Trungale

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

After watching David’s swings I was interested in finding out more about his golf history before I did the analysis. The following came from David in an email:   “I appreciate the quick response. I started playing golf at age 15 and am currently a 21 year old college student. (I do not play organized collegiate golf, just independently)   I never had any decent coaching when I played varsity golf in High School; my coach was very anti-mechanical and told me not to change anything in my swing. But I still practiced several hours a day. I would hit…

Testimonials: Derek Cribb

By Wayne | Testimonials

Hi Wayne, Thanks for analyzing my swing, it was very informative and helpful. I played the last two weeks and shot 76-80 (tough courses) I was very happy with my play the courses I played were both over 7500 yards and in very wet/cold conditions. The Swing is coming along very nicely, My practice sessions have been very productive and my shots are getting a lot tighter in shot dispersion, just gonna keep being patient with it and work hard.. I have set my goal at the end of the year to try and qualify on the Asian tour, I…

Swing Analysis: Ben Hogan Face On With the Driver 1947

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Hogan won 30 tournaments in the years 1946, 47, and 48 (and won two majors in 48), before the bus hit him in early 49. It is my belief that he had his game and his swing pretty much grooved, and that had he not had the accident his record in the decade of the 50’s and into the 60’s would have made him the greatest player of all time. My bet is that Hogan would have won upwards of 25 majors and over 100 Tour events. He was always the hardest worker amongst all the great players, and he…

Playing for Money: Nick Antonelli

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Nick has been in Florida trying to earn money on the mini-tours and ready himself for Q-School each year, but has not had the kind of success he was hoping for. He played a few times with one of my students, Ben Silverman, and decided to come see me for some help. As you will see, Nick has what most of the young players have these days, a great build for the game and a fluid, powerful motion. When length is not an issue it all boils down to control, and that’s where swing analysis and technique work come into…

Lesson of the Week: Bruce Gross Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

When I told one of my students about the amazing progress Bruce made in his first lesson, he reminded me that it would be the first swing I saw the next time I worked with Bruce that would decide if the lesson were really that amazing. I thought about that and reflected on how difficult it is to retain what you get in a lesson when the teacher is not always there to correct you when you begin to either revert to old bad habits or evolve into some new form of problem. I had to agree with him, so…

Bubba and Brian Harman: A Tale of Two Lefties

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It’s not always that you get two lefties coming down the stretch in a Tour event and finishing in the top 5, but Bubba Watson and Brian Harman did just that at Riviera. What is interesting is that while they stand up to the ball similarly, as soon as the body and club start moving the swings are, with a few other exceptions, quite different. Bubba is a unique combination of power player and shot making wizard, while Harman is less physically imposing and plays more of a control game out of necessity. While they both have their arms well…

You Mean You’re not Supposed to Hold it Like a Bird?

By Wayne | Articles: The Golf Swing, Short Game and Putting

If you had been using the proper concepts and still were as bad as you have been, you would have good reason to be depressed about your chances of ever being any good. But since you have never given your body a chance to try it the right way, you don’t know just what your potential might be. So instead of being annoyed at spending so much time on the wrong track, you should be excited about finally getting on the right track. I think you will start to make some tremendous progress once we spend some time incorporating your new conceptions into good mechanics and correct feel.

Lesson of the Week: Bruce Gross

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

We started off with a pitching wedge, hitting to a flag that was 95 yards out. Bruce couldn’t get within 30 yards of it, and when you see the first batch of swings it should be apparent why. I don’t know if he even realized what an amazing transformation he had just made, but I have to say I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything quite as startling as the difference in the first and last swings.

Swing Analysis: Kevin Stadler

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I once played 36 holes in the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier with Kevin and his ball striking was impressive. He is a big guy with a thick chest and waist, but his athleticism is obvious when you watch him move. He is a bit fidgety in his set-up routine, and triggers his swing with a slight forward bend on the knee toward the ball. I wouldn’t recommend this to most players, as any tendency to lift or straighten up during the swing tends to cause problems as the swing progresses, but it doesn’t seem to bother Kevin. He is tremendously…
