Online Students: Jason Margetts

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Jason is working hard on his technique, and states in his email that the faster he swings the worse he hits it, which is a problem when you take note of how slow his swing is in general when he hits the ball. It is important for Jason to overcome this and thus he needs to get out the metronome and work on putting whatever ideas he has for the swing into a 3:1 rhythm. Many times this helps sort out which thoughts are useful on the course and what combinations will work. Along with the tempo work Jason can…

Progress Report: Wayne D. Heads to the 2014 PNC

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It’s been 13 years since I won the CPC (now known as the PGA PNC) and I haven’t made the cut since 2007 or something like that, so each year I try to prepare knowing that I am on the downside of my playing career but still eager to put what I know about the swing into action on the course. I have some hope this year as I have had some decent results early (mostly due to short game and putting) but also because I have been working out diligently and am in the best shape and feeling stronger…

Online Students: Jim Lungstrom

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Ryan Lungstrom sent in his father’s (Jim’s) swings for an online lesson as a Father’s Day gift. I always tell people that it is very humbling to be given as a gift, so thank you Ryan. Here is Ryan’s email to me explaining his dad’s predicament: Wayne- These swings were recently shot of my Dad, Jim Lungstrom. Jim is 57 years old and been golfing for around 30 years. His usga index is currently 11.9. Jim takes pretty good care of his body and is pretty athletic for his age. He can play well at times but is prone to…

Online Students: Connor Thompson

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here is another powerful looking swing from a young player, Connor Thomson. Hey Wayne, I’m 18 years old and have been playing golf for 7 years now. Being a good athlete I picked up the game pretty quickly and began winning local tournaments within the first couple of years. By 15 I dropped to a 2 handicap and started playing fairly well, but within the last few years I have reached a plateau with my game bouncing around between a +1 to 1 handicap. Ball striking and driving have been the weakest part of my game and it has led…

Lesson of the Week: Don Tutt

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Don is now almost fully recovered from being sick for a while, and thought it would be a good time to come out to see me since he had joined the website and loved the content. He thought he might have lost some strength since he was not hitting the ball with much force, but I saw right away that his pivot was aggressive and that he had the ability to move the club fast enough to hit the ball a long way. I figured there was a serious technique issue involved, and I could pretty much pick out the…

Swing Analysis: Hideki Matsuyama

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It tickles me to hear the TV announcers gush about Matsuyama’s “great tempo”. The young Japanese star, winner of the Memorial Tournament, is about as unconventional when it comes to rhythm and tempo as you will ever see. Matsuyama’s rhythm is 5:1, which in a world where the vast majority of players use a 3:1 rhythm is like slow motion in the backswing. Not only that, Matsuyama has no “catch” at the top of his swing, preferring to come to almost a complete stop before driving with the hips. It’s not surprising that he is regarded as having great tempo…

Swing Analysis: J.B. Holmes

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Sometimes I analyze a swing for the first time and am fascinated by things I didn’t expect to see. That is the case with JB Holmes, who does a bunch of cool stuff in his swing that allows him to be one of the game’s longest hitters even with what appears to be a less than full swing. It doesn’t hurt that Holmes is super strong, but it is his extreme sidearm throwing technique that really allows him to turn on the power without a whole lot of obvious ground compression / lowering. Holmes adds wrist cock to relatively un-cocked…

Swing Analysis: Adam Scott’s #1 Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I was almost shocked when I saw this swing of Scott’s on television: not because of anything Scott does, but because it is filmed with a stationary camera from the proper angle (behind the hands) and the proper distance away from the player. Imagine that! So, what we get to do is a standard Wayne D. analysis without the problem of camera angles and moving cameras, and we can really see just how good this is and how he has improved from the last time I analyzed his swing. The big thing here is that he has fixed the upper…
