Online Students: Mark Osbourn

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is a little different as far as what we usually see in a swing analysis in that Mark has an excellent move that is just a bit too short and compact and comes in with a bit too much sidearm action, the combination of which has him approaching impact from under the plane. I would like to see Mark increase his upper body coil and lower back engagement in the backswing, which I believe would help him produce more power and keep him from over-flattening the shaft in the downswing. He is really a candidate for a hands-on lesson,…

Swing Analysis: How Bubba Won

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I guess you could say that if Bubba didn’t make the putts he wouldn’t have won the Masters. But over time if you’re not putting for birdies or putting for pars from easier positions you are not going to make as many and will probably not beat someone who is hitting it better than you are. Bubba simply hit the ball better than the competition, which means longer and straighter, and followed it up with a nice short game and effective putting and won the tournament handily. In the video I highlight 3 holes, the tough par-3 4th, the 8th,…

Swing Analysis: More Observations on Ben Hogan from the Face-On View

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I hadn’t studied this particular face-on view of Hogan with the grid in the background in some time, so when I popped it up the other night and started looking at it there were so many cool things going on that I got inspired to do a video. I spend most of the video pointing out things that people tend to get totally wrong when it comes to Hogan’s swing, focusing especially on the width and the right loading in the backswing, the swing length, and the right arm action. If more people would just spend the time watching these…

In Defense of the Game of Golf

By Wayne | Articles: In Golf as in Life

I’m getting a bit tired of reading about the “problems” with golf. Check out a recent article in GolfWorld Magazine titled “Intensifying the Solutions Search- Hack Golf Seeks Grow-the-Game Ideas From Any and All”: “…Golf participation is dwindling in the United States, and there is no indication the decline is about to stop. According to Joe Beditz, CEO of the NGF (National Golf Foundation), the game has lost 5 million golfers in the last decade. Moreover, the number of core golfers-defined by the NGF as playing at least 8 times a year, a subset that is responsible for 90 percent…

Online Students: Ryan Groves Part 3

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Ryan is an archetypal member of this website: an avid golfer in search of ideas beyond the stock instruction offered by most teaching pros and media outlets, he stumbled upon my swing analysis videos on YouTube and joined the site almost immediately. Ryan has an interesting back story (you can look it up on the website under “My Goals and Aspirations”) as his biological father was a mini-tour bum (not meaning to be harsh: I was one of those for a while myself) and he was disinclined to have anything to do with golf when he was young. As it…
