Online Lesson: Mark Armstrong- Wondering Why his Hips Come Out of the Box After Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Message to Wayne Hi Wayne,    one question I had when looking at the videos is wondering why my weight (hip) shifts to the right after impact. I can never stay in the phone booth sort of speak because my right leg and hip fall outside after impact. Hope that makes sense. not sure it will. The issue Mark has with his right leg leaving the “box” after impact may appear to be of questionable importance (it’s after impact so what does it matter?) but because things happen so fast in a swing (a total of one second give or…

Online Students: Mark Armstrong

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is a good example of how important the set-up is in how the golf swing functions, and how posture and balance can determine how the body moves once the swing gets started. Mark has exaggerated knee flex for sure, but most importantly he starts with his weight well back into his heels. As soon as I see a set-up like this I expect the general movement of the pivot to be forward toward the ball, and keeping the hips in the box almost an impossibility.

“In the box” for Better Impact – With Help From The Posture Pod

By Wayne | Videos: Faults, Fixes and Drills

“In the box” is a phrase I have coined to highlight the importance of having the hips stay deep during the swing. If the head stays out over the ball the deepening of the hips produces an increase in posture during the swing, which means that the head of the golfer will lower both in the backswing and in the first part of the downswing. The Golf Posture Pod is a device that allows you to train this movement while visually measuring whether or not you are being successful at your attempt to deepen the hips during the swing. If…

Lesson of the Week: Elliot Smith

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Elliott is a 90’s shooter (although it looks better than that) who has come to Woodmont for his first lesson with me, and as we have seen before first lessons are always interesting as I have to assess the student in a short period of time by asking a few pertinent questions and then videoing the swing. I usually take a bit of time watching a swing for the first time as I have to formulate a game plan going forward without overwhelming the student with too much too soon, always a juggling match (what is too much or too…

Lesson of the Week: Jordan Schwartz and the Posture Pod

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

We are used to seeing pretty good swings in these lesson videos, but as you can see I teach plenty of people who struggle mightily with the essential items needed to swing decently, and yet are out there practicing and trying to incorporate what would seem to be basic and simple to more accomplished players. Whether it is lack of athletic awareness or just a lack of ability doesn’t really matter: it is my job to find ways for such players to first understand the concepts behind swinging the club correctly and then to get them to execute the movements,…

Lesson of the Week: Jim Heerwagen

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jim was visiting the DC area from California and had been a member of the website for some time so he decided to pay a visit. He had recently been to a golf school where he reported that he had worked mostly on tempo and balance. I found that to be interesting as it turned out that we wound up working on the very same things, as you will see in the video.   The first thing I noticed in watching Jim hit some full shots was how slow his swing looked. We talked a bit about what he had…

The P.A.T. Project: Student Lesson: CJ D’Arco Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

As you know if you have watched the previous videos of CJ’s swing, we are attempting to get through the Player Ability Test for the PGA of America, which is a must if you are going to continue on in your quest to become a PGA Member. Most of the requirements to be a PGA Professional are book learning (you have to attend 3 different weeks of “business school” and pass tests on the information presented, as well as completing extensive course work in workbook form), but one requirement that presents a major hurdle for any aspiring pro who is…

Online Students: Santiago Escobar

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I’m not sure about the level of Santiago’s game, but this swing has the potential to produce some excellent ball striking. It should be obvious to you from the beginning that the question here is what to do with the clubface. It is just about facing the ground at shaft parallel in the takeaway, and it remains quite shut throughout the backswing. The wrist position at the top is not overly bowed, and indeed looks quite neutral, so the actual grip has to be questioned (I can’t tell from a video how the club is placed in the hands) and…

Online Students: Rob Kane Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I think it is so cool to be able to try to help someone from the other side of the world. Just thinking about the advances in technology over the last decade can make your head spin. Rob is from England, and here we see a classic right arm action issue, one that if you have watched a bunch of these lesson videos you find crops up quite often. Rob has a bunch of good stuff happening in his swing, and does a great job of returning the shaft pretty darn close to the original shaft plane on his approach…

Online Students: Derek Cribb Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Derek worked on his first online lesson for about 2 weeks before sending another set of swings, and the change is noticeable. While his arms don’t appear to be a lot softer at address I think his right arm is actually much softer than the first swings he sent, and that has helped him quite a bit in improving his takeaway and thus his entire backswing. His right arm now bends a bit and stays wider in the first part of the backswing, which allows him to achieve a fuller swing overall and opens up the possibility of pointing the…
