Online Students: Allie Economou

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Allie is a junior in high school who has played some golf, but quit for a while and is now getting back into it. Her brother, Tommy, plays for Rice University and her father, Michael, is a student of the game and a fan of the website and is working with both of them. He sent me Allie’s videos to analyze after my work with Tommy’s swing had some success.   I really like Allie’s swing for its aggressiveness. It is becoming somewhat prevalent in women’s golf to see slow backswings and less than catchy transitions, but Allie does not…

Lesson of the Week: Austin Lyons

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Austin Lyons is fascinated by the golf swing. He doesn’t get to play as much as he would like, but the attempt to master the technique that only a few are capable of drives him to practice, and to explore means of improving. Austin has been to other, more well- known instructors, but has found his way to my site and is happy to drive the 4 hours from New York City to come down for a face to face. Austin’s problems stem from a fairly typical pattern of movement wherein he keeps his upper right arm up and back…

Wayne D. Finds the Winner’s Circle Again (first time in a while)

By Wayne | blog

Going into the Middle Atlantic Section Senior-Junior Two Man Team championship I had no particular reason to believe anything good was going to happen. I had been practicing more at my new job since the weather had been spotty and my schedule was not full, and I had seen some good things in practice, but my driving was still inconsistent and I was sporting two new Taylormade TP wedges and a new counter-balanced Spider Si putter which had not been tested in competition. I would not have played at all had it not been for my good friend Pat Coyner…

Online Students: Tommy Economou

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Tommy Economou plays on the Rice University golf team and came to me via his father, Michael. This is the first email I received from Mike, and the video is my first analysis of Tommy’s swing.   Wayne: I have been on your website and have learned probably more about the golf in a short period than over the last 15 years. I have applied your preferences to my own swing with amazing improvement, although not consistent. That said Tommy’s swing has improved with knowledge/ incorporation of side arm throwing motion. I will forward swing videos this week for your…

Swing Analysis: Ryan Moore

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is another great example of a non-traditional swing that still demonstrates some of the key movements that make great players what they are. When you consider that some teachers insist that a swing must be “on plane” in the backswing, Moore’s swing, much like Jim Furyk’s and many others, flies in the face of that conventional wisdom. Moore’s move has the shaft vertical to the ground at left arm parallel in the backswing, but he counters that by flattening the shaft up to 60 degrees in transition, giving him an approach that looks much like any of the great…

Lesson of the Week: Arthur Slaven

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

This series of lessons is an example of the difficulties of making wholesale changes to a swing that has been formulated over many years of play and practice. Arthur is a decent player (an 8 handicap) but plays to that via a nice short game and good putting. He considers his ball striking to be substandard, and has not been able to improve much in spite of real effort with practice and lesson taking. He came to me at the suggestion of one of my long time students, Alan Appelbaum, who went from a 12 handicap to a 2 under…
