Swing Analysis: Harris English Demonstrates the “Hands Out” Move

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Once again we see a successful Tour player demonstrate the “out” move with the hands while flattening the shaft back in transition. English is one of the best ball strikers and all-around players on the Tour in only his 3rd year, and seems to have the even keel demeanor to go along with his obvious talent and technique to be a force on the Tour for many years to come. He is a big guy, going at 6 foot 3 and 190 pounds, and uses a massive thrust with his lower body through impact along with a fairly wide approach…

Lesson of the Week: Chris Lane Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Chris has been coming along nicely with his swing as he is getting used to gaining about a foot in height over the past couple years. He is quite thin, like lots of kids his age who go through growth spurts, and has had trouble feeling the connection between the upper and lower bodies. His tendency is to get the club too deep in the backswing early, and then lift the left arm to the top while laying off the shaft, then coming down from too far away from his body. My goal here in this lesson is to get…

As Seen on TV: Chamblee is Dead Wrong Again

By Wayne | Videos: As Seen On TV and Extras

I keep wondering where Brandel Chamblee gets his information. Does he come up with stupid statements like “Jack Nicklaus picked the ball, Phil Mickelson picked the ball, Tom Watson picked the ball” in his dreams or does he watch their swings and simply misinterpret what he sees? After watching this video can anyone truthfully say that Chamblee knows what he is talking about when it comes to the golf swing? How about saying that players with “down-set” (apparently his name for adding angle between the wrists and the shaft in transition) forward lean the club too much and thus can’t…

The P.A.T. Project: Student Lesson: CJ D’Arco Part 5

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

The P.A.T. or Player Ability Test for the PGA of America, which is a must if you are going to continue on in your quest to become a PGA Member. Most of the requirements to be a PGA Professional are book learning (you have to attend 3 different weeks of “business school” and pass tests on the information presented, as well as completing extensive course work in workbook form), but one requirement that presents a major hurdle for any aspiring pro who is not a good player is the PAT, which sets a goal of shooting 15 strokes or less…

Major Championships: It’s all about the Course and what it means to win

By Wayne | blog

Watching the Masters this week brings back memories of playing in the 9 major championships I was fortunate enough to qualify for. I only made the cut in one of them, but even that is something I consider to be one of the few great achievements of my playing career. I enjoy watching the majors now more than ever because having experienced the full effect of playing in those conditions I can appreciate more than most what is required to do well, and the herculean effort it takes to actually win one.   I always loved the practice rounds. Just…

“In the box” for Better Impact – With Help From The Posture Pod

By Wayne | Videos: Faults, Fixes and Drills

“In the box” is a phrase I have coined to highlight the importance of having the hips stay deep during the swing. If the head stays out over the ball the deepening of the hips produces an increase in posture during the swing, which means that the head of the golfer will lower both in the backswing and in the first part of the downswing. The Golf Posture Pod is a device that allows you to train this movement while visually measuring whether or not you are being successful at your attempt to deepen the hips during the swing. If…

Lesson of the Week: Justin Duffie Part 6

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Here we have our old friend, Justin Duffie, who has been working with me for just over 4 years now. His progress has been phenomenal, but he has developed a serious issue with striking the ball off of the fairway. Looking at his swing from face on you might not figure that would be a problem since he has learned to move his hands into an excellent approach position, but from down the line I noticed right away that his right arm was not straightening at all through impact. I brought up the subject of throwing and commented that you…

Testimonials: Tamim Mohammad

By Wayne | Testimonials

Mr. DeFracesco, I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you yet, but just wanted to let you know I shot 79 yesterday for the first time breaking 80 thanks to the information and analyses of golf swings you have shared online, combined of course with my background in basketball, football and baseball. I’ve had more practice than I should have had this past winter here in Boston, as I was so excited to learn about Mr. Hogan’s swing, and your validation of controlled lowering of the head through the back and down swing, as well as the initial movement of…

How to Play Golf Without Thinking

By Wayne | Articles: Technology, Equipment and Teaching

“…When you throw a ball to me, without thought, my hands go up and catch it, When a child or animal runs in front of your car, you automatically apply the brakes. When you throw a punch at me, I intercept and hit you back, but without thought. ‘It’ just happens. ‘It’ is the state of mind the Japanese refer to as “mushin”, which literally means ‘no-mind’. According to Zen masters, mushin is operating when the actor is separate from the act and no thoughts interfere with the action because the unconscious act is the most free and uninhibited. When…
