Swing Analysis: Boo Weekley

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Boo is one of the more interesting characters on the PGA Tour, and his swing demonstrates quite a few things that I like to focus on when teaching players of all levels. A couple of things that I would probably not teach (but wouldn’t change in player of Weekley’s caliber) are his strong grip and his locked elbow address position. He uses both to his advantage, however, and winds up with one of the strongest impact positions in golf.   In many cases with normal (non-tour) players the tight arms and pinched right arm backswing result in the right arm…

Lesson of the Week: Jeff Anderson

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jeff is from Louisiana but has been living in China for the past 15 years or so, and stopped in for a lesson last week while visiting friends in the area. To the eye Jeff’s fast, aggressive swing has good lines and seems all in order. Jeff knows from experience, however, that his ball striking is not as solid and predictable as it should be, and also knows that he had a long term issue with sequence. Here we see the power of the video camera, because in a 21/8.5 swing (fairly fast backswing but a forward swing that doesn’t…

Swing Analysis: Inbee Park

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This swing is really a tale of two halves when it comes to what I prefer in a golf swing, the first half (backswing) being nothing like I would teach, while the second half (transition and forward swing) has a ton of what I like. Of course, she is winning practically every tournament she plays in, so my observations are not a criticism but rather an analysis based on what I usually consider technique items that I would teach pretty much any player.   I am a big fan of Tour Tempo, John Novosel’s book based around a remarkably simple…

Online Students: Brendan Howell

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here we see a nice swing to the eye that has some issues that only show up with slow motion analysis. Brendan sets up well to the ball and utilizes a fluid motion that appears to follow the plane lines well and would seem to produce a strong impact position. Closer analysis, however, reveals a weaker than desired impact and upon examining the pattern of the swing once it is initiated, issues with the takeaway and transition that cause the impact alignments to be compromised.   By using the slow motion video analysis with the standard Wayne D. lines we…

Online Students: Adam Auger Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here we see a very good golf swing that produces a high level impact from the face on view, with a nice amount of forward shaft lean and sustain well into the follow through. However, when going over it with the slow motion camera and lines there are a few things that we can work on to clean it up and make it better. The idea is to make the delivery of the face more consistent, and when we look at the approach angle of the hands they are coming in somewhat high and exiting somewhat lower, thus a down…

Swing Analysis: The 18th at Merion: McIlroy and Westwood Navigate the Bunker

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

As I was going through my DVR of the 1st round of the U.S. Open I was reminiscing about my own play there in the 1981 championship, and I recalled hitting a few practice shots out of the bunker to the right of the 18th green. From the bottom of the bunker I could barely see the top of the wicker basket, and the green was like a tabletop, so anything other than a perfect shot was going to be a bogey, and that on a hole that I was hitting 2-iron or fairway wood to the green for my…

Swing Analysis: CPC (PNC) Champion Rod Perry

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Club pros play in a different league than do touring pros, but the demands of the game do not change. The shots still have to be hit, the course navigated, and the only difference is that the players in the field as a whole are not quite as good overall as the players in a tour event. That said, you can only beat the people you are playing against, so the fact that your winning score might have finished 30th if it were a Tour event is meaningless. I won this very tournament on this course, and I played in…

Lesson of the Week: Chris Lane

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

You have met Chris’ brother Joey and mom Bev, and now we get a look at young Chris. It’s pretty amazing how much Chris has grown over 3 years, and that change in body dimensions has definite effects on the swing. Chris is building up some muscle now but previously he was quite thin, and it isn’t easy for skinny people to feel the connection between the upper and lower bodies that allows the swing to synchronize properly. The disconnect is apparent in the first swings Chris showed up with today, as his right leg and knee overdrive and his…

Swing Analysis: Right Arm Action: Drive it in or Leave it back?

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In this video I take a look at the way the right arm functions in different players, and discuss my reasons for preferring one method over the other. We start with Tiger Woods and Henrik Stenson, both of whom have great looking lines in their swings when watching from down the line. There is a major difference, however, in the way they use their right arm in during the swing to produce those lines. Stenson flares his arm in the backswing (as I would prefer and as I teach) but then leaves it back when the body changes direction so…
