Swing Analysis: Tom Pernice

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Tom Pernice is easily one of the best ball strikers on the Champions Tour, and I don’t hold it against him that he has worked for years with Jim Hardy. As I have said in the past, I have nothing against what Hardy teaches, although I would treat the movement of the right arm in the swing completely differently than what Hardy espouses in his books and clinics. My problem with Hardy is his use of Ben Hogan to demonstrate his idea of right arm action, that is that the right arm stays up and back in transition while the…

The Mental Game: On Playing Bad

By Wayne | Articles: The Mental Game

“Things just go from bad to worse, Starts like a kiss, and ends like a curse.” Jim Carroll   There is no way around it: no matter how good, bad or indifferent you are as a golfer it is inevitable that you will play bad. And what do I mean by bad? Well, if we check the Thesaurus we will find a number of other words to describe it- awful, terrible, dreadful, appalling, shocking, ghastly, horrific, dire, and unpleasant. One or more of these synonyms may appeal to you, but the truth of the matter is that the feelings engendered…

Online Students: Camille Champagne

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

The first thing I want to do here is to share with you Camille’s email that came with his swings. After reading it I was intrigued by the possibilities of what I would see, especially since he took an online lesson from a Plane Truth (Hardy) guy. Thus, it is quite interesting that the exact issue that I have with Hardy and his teaching, the action of the trailing arm, is at the forefront of this lesson. In fact, almost everything about Camille’s swing is first-rate other than (in my opinion) his left arm movement in transition and through impact.…

Phil Should Be the One

By Wayne | blog

Have you ever wondered why Tiger Woods is better than Phil Mickelson? I can sum it up in two words: better mechanics. Phil is a great player who plays far beyond what his swing should produce. To put it simply, Phil has poor mechanics. Without going into detail for this piece let’s just say that Phil’s swing puts so much pressure on his hands to time the release that it only works sometimes. And while that is a truism for every player Phil is on the side of “hey, that guy shouldn’t be that good”. And. if you look at…

Online Students: Sigurour Oli Jensson (Siggy)

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Siggy sends his swings in from Iceland and as you can see there is a golf season there. He wrote a nice note to go along with the swings, so I am going to let you read that instead of me paraphrasing. I think it will be interesting for you to read his comments and then watch the video. After looking at his swings I could really see where he was coming from with his complaints about not being able to hit quality shots. This is another bit of evidence that pivot movement is the key to high level ball…

PGA Championship: Last 4 holes

By Wayne | blog

Ok. Just watching the PGA. Furyk just left his putt on 15 6 feet short. Dufner hits the 3 wood off the fringe to a foot and a half. Furyk for the par. It would seem like he has to make it, although history tells us anything is possible. Furyk is the ultimate grinder. Nails it. What a good putt. Still has a chance. Dufner from 2 feet. Right in the middle. Great stuff. Now Stenson for birdie. Leaves it short. Three back with the two tough finishing holes left. Has to do something heroic.   The shot Dufner hit…

Swing Analysis: Jason Kokrak

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

There seem to be more and more guys like Kokrak playing their way onto the Tour, extra- large physically while being technically sound with a fluid motion that produces what appears to be effortless power. I really like his posture at address, and I will show this to students to demonstrate an athletic stance, ready for action with the weight out onto the balls of the feet.

Lesson of the Week: Jordan Schwartz and the Posture Pod

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

We are used to seeing pretty good swings in these lesson videos, but as you can see I teach plenty of people who struggle mightily with the essential items needed to swing decently, and yet are out there practicing and trying to incorporate what would seem to be basic and simple to more accomplished players. Whether it is lack of athletic awareness or just a lack of ability doesn’t really matter: it is my job to find ways for such players to first understand the concepts behind swinging the club correctly and then to get them to execute the movements,…

Lesson of the Week: Jake Ruben

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jake is a member of my club and has not taken a lesson from me until this past week, although he has been playing there for a number of years. He told me that he hasn’t taken lessons at all for about 5 years, but has still managed to become a scratch golfer. He has become tired of his erratic play in competition, however, and finally bit the bullet and decided to try to fix some of the funkiness that he was aware of but unsure how to go about changing. You will see what I mean when you look…

Swing Analysis: Kevin Streelman

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I think this is one of the best swings on Tour right now. Of course, I am biased toward the technique characteristics that I like to teach, but hey, this is all just my opinion anyway. The one thing that Kevin does that I would say is a flaw that he needs to work on, the up and under move with the hips, is the very thing that Kevin and his coach highlight in a video they did at a Trackman seminar. In the swings here, while not perfect angles or completely stable, still show that Kevin has a tendency…
