Swing Analysis: Ian Poulter Makes Nice Changes

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Ian Poulter finished up his year quite well, battling Henrik Stenson down to the wire in the Race to Dubai. While he came up short with Stenson playing better than anyone in the world he demonstrated upgraded ball striking and an overall solid game. This was not a random occurrence, as you will see in this video where I point out the fairly major change Poulter has made in his takeaway and the resulting changes in his backswing as it progresses to left arm parallel and to the top.

Swing Analysis: Harris English

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Harris English is a solid player who has a chance to add to his victory total in short order and may be a contender in the biggest events. His game is solid all-around, and when his putter is on like it was at Mayakoba he will be right up there on Sunday. His swing is a mix of Wayne D. likes and dislikes, but his “hands out” move from the top and his excellent pivot movement more than make up for his high approach. He has the size to be able to go at the ball at less than full…

Swing Analysis: Rory McIlroy Uses Revamped Swing to Beat Scott in Australia

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Rory McIlroy signaled that he is ready to make a run at returning to #1 by outplaying Adam Scott in the final round of the Australian Open. He used a revamped swing that you will see in the video is what I would consider to be a major improvement to the one that won him 2 majors. I compare those wins to Tiger winning the Masters in 1997 with a swing that would be completely different by the time he won the PGA in 1999. There is a much better understanding now about how a swing needs to function for…

Swing Analysis: Henrik Stenson

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Henrik Stenson takes his place along with Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy as Europeans who have risen to have dominant years in terms of big wins and earnings on both sides of the ocean. Stenson is playing the best golf in the world right now, winning both the FedEx Cup and the Race to Dubai with superlative performances. His ball striking is superior, and when he got hot with the putter there was no stopping him. He hits the ball long, but is definitely the straightest long hitter on the planet at the moment. As we look closely at his…

Swing Analysis: Wayne D. November, 2013

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Each week I take whatever time I can find and try to film myself hitting a few shots. I’ve been working out consistently (I do a half hour of isometrics and stretching, a half hour on the elliptical, and a half hour of resistance, band and floor training) trying to gain overall strength and I have been able to up the work on my lower body since starting with my new M.A.T. guy. My goal is to build myself up as best I can so that I can withstand the stress involved in staying out over the ball while keeping…

Swing Analysis: Lexi Thompson

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

People talk about how the PGA Tour is becoming a haven for bigger, stronger athletes who hit the ball miles and can still short game it, but Lexi Thompson is a great example of the same phenomenon on the LPGA Tour. While recently the Korean women have dominated the sport with accuracy and technique, players like Lexi and Suzanne Pettersen are showing how the power game can win big as well. At 5’8” and 150 pounds Pettersen is solid and extra strong, but she isn’t nearly the size of Thompson, who comes in at 6 feet tall and probably in…

Swing Analysis: Nancy Lopez

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Wow. This is one wild swing. Nancy won 48 LPGA Tour events and 3 majors while having three children, and is one of the best women golfers of the past 30 years. You certainly wouldn’t guess that if all you had to go on was the swing, which is one of the most idiosyncratic great player swings you will ever see. It just goes to show you that the greatest attribute any player can have is talent, as it is obvious that talent and a great touch around the greens can equal an exceptional career. There is always the question…

Swing Analysis: Graham Delaet

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Graham Delaet is not particularly young at age 30, but he is relatively new as a player on the world stage, recently having his best finish (T-2 at the Barclay’s) and qualifying (and playing quite well in the event) for the international President’s Cup team. While it is true that he hasn’t won an event yet (he has 3 wins on the Canadian Tour and one in South Africa) his ball striking statistics are exemplary, and that makes his swing compelling enough to take a closer look.   We see a number of interesting things in Delaet’s set up and…

Justin Rose Makes an Odd Looking Practice Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I was watching with curiosity the play at the recent Barclay’s championship where Justin Rose played excellent golf but lost after 3 putting the 18th hole from 20 feet. He repeatedly made rehearsal swings that had his hands dropping not just straight down but backwards, and did so without much leg movement. The move was pretty much exactly the opposite of what Tiger Woods was doing earlier in the year when he was rehearsing an exaggerated “hands out” move from the top, swing the club well left past impact and looking like he was trying to hit a big looping…

Jimmy Walker Misreading a Putt but Making it Anyway

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I thought this was a great example of how sometimes a player can do just about everything wrong and still get away with it. Jimmy Walker grossly under-reads this 5 foot, left to right breaking putt, lines the line up on the ball to his read, then proceeds to take his putter outside and loop it out even more so that it pulls the ball at least a cup left of the hole, after which the ball sneaks in the far right side of the cup. My take on this is that Walker instinctively and subconsciously knew that the putt…
