Major Championships: It’s all about the Course and what it means to win

By Wayne | blog

Watching the Masters this week brings back memories of playing in the 9 major championships I was fortunate enough to qualify for. I only made the cut in one of them, but even that is something I consider to be one of the few great achievements of my playing career. I enjoy watching the majors now more than ever because having experienced the full effect of playing in those conditions I can appreciate more than most what is required to do well, and the herculean effort it takes to actually win one.   I always loved the practice rounds. Just…

Happy Holidays 2013 from Wayne D.

By Wayne | blog

I wanted to wish all the members and other subscribers to WayneDeFrancesco.com Happy Holidays, and thank every one of you for taking the time to watch and listen to my posts. The game has played a huge roll in my life, and I find it fulfilling to be able to share my knowledge and experience with more than just the people who come to me for in person lessons. By now you should have figured out that I don’t even attempt to sugarcoat the fact that it is a difficult game, and that there are no magic methods or easy…

My Beef with Brandel: Article on Golfwrx

By Wayne | blog

I’ll be writing an occasional article for Golfwrx. An excerpt of the most recent one is below and links to the full article are included too. DeFrancesco: My beef with Brandel, and why I criticize TV announcers After reading through the GolfWRX forum thread “Brandel Chamblee Says Some Idiotic Things” (http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/815743-brandel-chamblee-says-idiotic-things-ongoing-thread/ ) and seeing my name come up multiple times I thought I might take a moment to explain why I take the time to challenge Chamblee in video commentary available on my website. It is important to note that, at least in my mind, I did not pick this…

Interesting Forum Topic: New Moneygolf Statistics (Strokes Gained Ball -Striking)

By Wayne | blog

Tom Kirkendall: Following on the popularity of his strokes gained-putting statistic, the MIT prof is adding more advanced statistics for PGA Tour players.   Wayne DeFrancesco: Great stuff.  Thanks for posting that.  Everyone should read it  In fact, I’ll have John post it on the front page.  I’ve been telling people this for years.  For the poor to average player who wants to get better (which means being able to shoot lower scores on harder golf courses) ball striking is the first priority, and driving is the most difficult task of all.  No one on the PGA Tour is a…

Ask Me Why I Do This (with video)

By Wayne | blog

As I write I’m sitting in the car in the parking lot at the Creighton Farms Golf Club just outside of Leesburg, Virginia in the midst of a rain delay at the beginning of the first round of the Senior Professional National Championship. It is 51 degrees and pouring, as it was when we warmed up (?) and teed off on the 10th hole at 8:17. By the time we got to the fairway there was pretty much casual water everywhere, and when we got to the green we were barely able to hit a putt without water interfering with…

Getting Ready for the Senior PNC

By Wayne | blog

I used to play in just about every tournament that was on the schedule for club pros in my section (Middle Atlantic), but now, at 56 and coming off 5 years of mediocre play, I am much more selective and tend to play in the ones that would merit a spot on the resume’ if I should happen to win. The Senior Professional National Championship (formally the Senior CPC before some genius changed the name) is one of those events, as in addition to being the biggest tournament a senior club pro can play in that’s not a Tour event…

Phil Should Be the One

By Wayne | blog

Have you ever wondered why Tiger Woods is better than Phil Mickelson? I can sum it up in two words: better mechanics. Phil is a great player who plays far beyond what his swing should produce. To put it simply, Phil has poor mechanics. Without going into detail for this piece let’s just say that Phil’s swing puts so much pressure on his hands to time the release that it only works sometimes. And while that is a truism for every player Phil is on the side of “hey, that guy shouldn’t be that good”. And. if you look at…

PGA Championship: Last 4 holes

By Wayne | blog

Ok. Just watching the PGA. Furyk just left his putt on 15 6 feet short. Dufner hits the 3 wood off the fringe to a foot and a half. Furyk for the par. It would seem like he has to make it, although history tells us anything is possible. Furyk is the ultimate grinder. Nails it. What a good putt. Still has a chance. Dufner from 2 feet. Right in the middle. Great stuff. Now Stenson for birdie. Leaves it short. Three back with the two tough finishing holes left. Has to do something heroic.   The shot Dufner hit…

Day 2 at the CPC: A Tough Day for the Old Man

By Wayne | blog

Well, when your game goes and you’re out on a brutally difficult course it goes without saying that you are going to have to grind with all you have in order not to shoot a ridiculously high score. That was the case today on the Crosswater course, all 7550 yards of it, in the chill and rain and with no roll in the fairways. Man, what a test. I think back on my win here and marvel at what I accomplished, because this is one great test of golf. The massive difference in what was happening in 2001 as opposed…

Playing for Money: Update on Len and Ben

By Wayne | blog

Hey, just an update on a couple of guys I’ve been working with. This past weekend Lenny finished T-7th at the Web.com Tour Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh, NC. Ben had a nice finish as well coming in T-6th at the NGA Tour Cutter Creek Classic in Snow Hill, NC. From Ben: Hey Wayno, Just wanted to let you know that I had my best finish on the NGA Tour so far. T6. Shot 71-68-70-68 (-11) and finished 3 shots back of the leaders. The game is coming along nicely and I’m working really hard to try to piece together…
