Online Lesson: Bill Stanford- the Influence of Posture on Everything

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Online Lesson: Bill Stanford- the Influence of Posture on Everything Hi Wayne, my continued quest to be better at golf continues. I played off a handicap of 3 always wanted to get down to scratch but could never manage to do it. Lots of issues in my swing but perhaps we can work on getting these corrected. Over the years my best score has been 67. The consistency however has never been there. I would love to be better and will work hard to try and get there. Not young anymore but still feel strong enough. I’m 58 years old.…

First Face to Face Lesson with Kevin Streelman- June 2014

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Kevin first contacted me in December of 2013 when he saw a video analysis I did of his swing from 2010. He had been working on some of the things I mentioned and was also interested in my love of Ben Hogan and his swing mechanics. It didn’t hurt that I was friendly with Kevin’s caddy at the time, A.J. Montecino, who gave me a thumbs up when Kevin asked if he knew me. Kevin sent me swings again in February, and after missing 3 straight cuts and then playing poorly while missing another cut at the U.S. Open at…

Online Lesson Follow-Up with Darin Pape

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Online Lesson Follow-Up with Darin Pape Darin’s follow-up swings show major improvement in the backswing and transition as he goes from crossing the line and steepening the shaft to laying the club off slightly and flattening the shaft as he starts down. The difference between his prior shaft position at P5 and the new one is striking. Now the issue is what to do with the flatter early downswing shaft position as far as delivering the club to the ball on plane while squaring the face. When the shaft is steep at P5 it doesn’t make sense to supinate the…

Lesson of the Week: Jon Krinn- the Helicopter Move

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Jon and I have been working hard on getting him not to steepen the shaft in transition, and although he has vastly improved his pivot movement he still tends to pull down on the grip wherever the shaft is pointing at the top. It occurred to me after watching the swing of Christiaan Bezuidenhout that if Jon could move the clubhead sideways with his hands before pulling down on the grip, as the South African does, it would make a big difference. Jon tried it, and it was one of those “eureka” moments where a simple thought effects a major…

Lesson of the Week: Jon Krinn-Trying to Shallow the Shaft as Opposed to Steepening it

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Executive chef Jon Krinn has been a friend and student for many years. When he opened a high-end restaurant in 2007, he got crushed by the recession and didn’t play golf for more than 10 years as he got his life back in order. We started back up at the end of 2018, and he played in a few events in 2019, qualifying for the Maryland State Open. He has a good mental image of what he wants his swing to do but the pattern of steepening the shaft in transition has been a stubborn thing to change. When you…

Playing for Money: My First Online Lesson with Kevin Streelman in 2014

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

I was quite surprised back in December of 2013 when I got an email from PGA Tour Professional Kevin Streelman. He was in China playing at the time and had watched a video I had done on his swing back in 2010 when he had a 3rd place finish at the Barclay’s. I loved his swing and commented that it was one of my favorites and that I suspected he would be quite successful. He asked his caddy at the time, A.J. Montecino, if he had ever heard of me. Luckily for me A.J.’s answer was “yes, I know Wayne…

Online Lesson: 9-Year-Old Dallas Duffie- Future Star

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Dallas is the son of my long time off and on student Justin Duffie, who has been coaching Dallas with what he has learned during our lessons over the last 10 years or so. Dallas has had some great results in his junior tournaments and is a remarkable athlete in multiple sports. His swing shows great physical ability for one so young, and here we see a flaw I find common among both growing boys and girls, the inability to sequence the hips correctly to start the forward swing. Dallas so far is relatively small for his age, although that…

10 MORE MISCONCEPTIONS

By Wayne | Articles , Articles: Becoming a Better Player

10 MORE MISCONCEPTIONS 1. “The pros make it look so easy.” Golf instructors hear this one all the time. When the average player gets a chance to see a tour caliber player in person they always marvel at how little energy the quality player seems to expend to hit the ball great distances. “Their swings look so effortless. It’s like they’re not even doing anything.” The poor player takes this illusion, and, not understanding what they are looking at, try to emulate the appearance of ease by making lazy, sloppy movements that begin with bad posture and a loose grip…

THE TRUTH ABOUT GOLF

By Wayne | Articles , Articles: Becoming a Better Player

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.   Jim Carroll So here it is, right in front of you. 200 yards, elevated tee, wind slightly in your face, pin front right, water surrounding the green. A hard four-iron gets the front third of the green and a chance at a birdie, a Rescue 3 clears the water easily but works to the back of the green and might be too much, plus the green slopes back to front and the back bunker is no good at all. The shot is really the four, although a miss-hit is almost surely wet. The…

Tyrell Hatton: Swing Analysis

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

You’ve got to love watching Tyrell Hatton play golf. It is so obvious that he feels the way we all feel when we are out on the links battling the game, the elements, our own thoughts, our unsure technique. Watching him win at Bay Hill made me feel like I shared his triumph, just like when Tiger won the Masters last year. He has an interesting swing, nothing like what I would prefer, as he gains no depth in his right hip and leans out toward the ball as he approaches the top of his swing. However, he has great…
