Live Observations: the 2014 PGA Championship

By Wayne | blog

I gave my few lessons at the club and headed home on this Sunday in August to watch the final round of the PGA Championship. I was at Valhalla on Monday and Tuesday with Kevin Streelman, who missed the cut by 2 shooting 69-76. Kevin won the week after we started working together, but has not continued that success with any top finishes. We are still working on the same stuff, and there are some things that are proving to be fairly stubborn. Anyway, I’m home now and there was a delay in the starting times due to rain so…

Online Students: Grady Dickens

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here is a swing that I’m guessing is modeled after Ben Hogan’s, with maybe influence also from Mac O’Grady. My suggestions start with the posture, and when I compare it to Hogan’s it is easy to see that Grady is way more hunched over with his weight more toward his heels than the balls of his feet. This has a deleterious effect on his downswing especially, as his legs stay under him and work even more under and to the right, causing his head to back up a considerable amount. I would like Grady to stand up and point the…

Online Students: Connor Kumpula

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Wayne, “Here are videos of my son Conner Kumpula. He is playing collegiate golf at Oregon State University. We have worked together on his swing. He is historically a player that hit golf shots with lots of shape. He would change swing planes and use his hands to accomplish this. He has won at every level without working that hard at it. Now that he is at college the course set ups do not allow for a shot to be that far off line. He is working harder now to incorporate good fundamentals into his swing to try and get…

TP&C: Tom Kite Part 3

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

This is another in the fascinating series of lessons with Hall of Famer Tom Kite. He sent these swings in from the range after the first round of the 3M Championship in Minnesota, along with another fabulous look at his swing from 1992. The two things I picked out this time are the angle of the shaft at left arm parallel in the backswing, and the aggressive thrust and rotation of the hips through impact. Tom’s club is now flatter at left arm parallel than in ’92, and my thought is that the pattern of moving the shaft from flat…

Liar Liar (A Golf Instructors Nightmare)

By Wayne | Articles: Technology, Equipment and Teaching

On any given day, during any given lesson, a golf instructor is consistently forced to play with, bend, tweak, and generally ignore the truth. His or her main concern, after of course giving the student the benefit of his experience and knowledge about the swing and the game, is to offer support, reassurance, solace, and comfort to the weary, beaten-down student, for the simple reason that a teacher can’t help a student unless the student continues to take lessons. If the student gives up and never returns, the teacher can be of no further help and, regardless of whose fault…

Swing Analysis: Rickie Fowler Modifies his Changes

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It is great to have the opportunity to study how Rickie Fowler is going about changing his swing with the idea in mind to become one of the top players on Tour. While he has had great results in the majors so far in 2014 (a 5th and two 2nds) the changes he has made have not improved his ball striking statistics, and he appears to be in a Jason Day type mode with high finishes in big events but few wins otherwise.

Online Students: Allie Economou Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Allie did a nice job getting into a more athletic posture and increasing her tempo after the first lesson, and now needs to concentrate on continuing to try to soften the arms at address, especially the right arm. When the right arm is tight and stiffens as the takeaway starts with the elbow twisting inward, the left arm has nowhere to go except out and around, which is why Allie’s hands still move away from her body immediately after the swing initiates. This sets up a pattern in which the upper left arm disconnects from the chest, and since Allie…
