Chamblee Changes his Tune on Tiger

By Wayne | Videos: As Seen On TV and Extras

If it wasn’t obvious before, it certainly should be now: Brandel Chamblee, like the finest politicians, will say whatever fits the situation, paying no mind to anything he has said in the past. I suppose that is the nature of television. You are required to fill up space and do it in an interesting fashion in order to keep your job. If you can make it look like you are an authority and can conjure up a little controversy as well you might even become a star. Chamblee has smartly chosen Tiger Woods as the main subject for his analysis,…

Chamblee on Tiger’s Hand Path: Borrowing from a Great Source

By Wayne | Videos: As Seen On TV and Extras

There is very little original thought on display in golf instruction, and the truth is that every morsel of such originality is eventually taken by those who are looking for ideas and used for their own benefit. In some cases the ideas are paraphrased to make it seem that they weren’t borrowed, and in other cases the owner of the original thought is credited for the information, which is, of course, the more honest way to do things. There are other instances in which information is blatantly plagiarized and no credit is given, which is what I believe is on…

Online Students: Michael Fredrickson

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Michael was a scratch player up to the age of about 40, when due to family obligations had to stop playing for an extended period, a scenario that I am finding is fairly common: a good player taking time off then struggling upon returning to the game. You can see reasons for both Michael’s good play and recent struggles. He has a nice, fluid motion with good sequence and plenty of clubhead lag, and as a result he leans the club forward on the ball for good contact.   On the negative side we see some things that need work.…

Swing Analysis: Paula Creamer

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Paula began her career as though she would become one of the all-time greats, but her progress has slowed considerable over the last 4 years as she has only one win in that period (after 8 in the previous 3 years) and has fallen to #13 in the World Rankings. Still, she is a great player and any analysis should start by pointing out her excellent shaft control and dynamic pivot motion. If I were working with her I would start by deepening her right hip in the backswing, which would allow her a chance to keep from moving her…

Swing Analysis: Wayne D. Still Grinding

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It’s almost comical how I try to prepare for a tournament by practicing more than usual, then get out on the course when it counts to find my back stiff and my body unwilling to move the way I want it to, and start thinking about retiring from competitive golf so I don’t have to beat myself up trying to be as good as I used to be. Of course, after a day or two of rest you’ll find me hitting balls or at least thinking about how I can go about getting better and how I might be able…

Online Students: Santiago Escobar

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I’m not sure about the level of Santiago’s game, but this swing has the potential to produce some excellent ball striking. It should be obvious to you from the beginning that the question here is what to do with the clubface. It is just about facing the ground at shaft parallel in the takeaway, and it remains quite shut throughout the backswing. The wrist position at the top is not overly bowed, and indeed looks quite neutral, so the actual grip has to be questioned (I can’t tell from a video how the club is placed in the hands) and…

Lesson of the Week: Five Hours in February

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I thought I would give everybody a better insight into what I do on any given day on the lesson tee. I happened to have these 5 hour long lessons back to back on a 24 degree day in early February, and as is always the case each student presents an entirely new set of circumstances to deal with, which is exactly why I truly enjoy teaching golf. It’s like starting a new job every time a new face shows up, and whether it’s a first time lesson or someone I’ve been teaching for years it is always fresh and…

Lesson of the Week: Kent Long

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I spent the week down in the Orlando area playing and teaching and had a chance to spend some time with Kent Long, who has seen me for a few hours in the recent past and was looking for more feedback on his attempt to understand and feel exactly what happens when the club changes direction in a golf swing. He has taken lessons from quite a few well known instructors, but still had a hard time getting his mind around the combination of things that happen to set up a good approach to impact, which is, of course, the…

TP&C: Len Mattiace Part 3

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Lenny and I spent two and half days down in Jupiter January 2013 in a continuation of the work we are doing trying to get him back on the PGA Tour. Lenny missed at the finals of Q-School in November, and now will be full time on the Web.Com Tour for this year. He will be playing in the first 5 events before the reshuffle, and he would (obviously) like to get off to a good start.   My main focus with Lenny has been to concentrate on the things that will produce a better strike of the ball, mainly…

Online Students: Tom Richards Part 5

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Tom’s continued progress is a testament to the efficacy of online lessons. This is his 5th go round, and the difference between his swing now and a year and a half ago is startling. He has really done a nice job changing the way he controls the shaft and sequences his lower body to produce a more sidearm delivery, but we see here that he has some work to do with his pivot movement, as it tends to drive overly sideways and not quite enough around. My suggestion is to aim the hip drive more sharply to the left, which…
