Lesson of the Week: Richard Kress-Old Habits Die Hard

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Richard is one of my oldest friends in golf, and we have been working together for almost 40 years.  He has always struggled with keeping his posture and hip depth during the swing, and the amount of time he has spent working on it and the results you see here tell you how difficult it is to change something that has produced decent results over time.  Richard is 76 now and can shoot his age, but his goal has always been to swing correctly and strike the ball with authority.  He has always been an early extender but was able…

Lesson of the Week: Mike Erickson- Keeping the Hips in the Box in the Backswing

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Mike is a big guy at 6’3” and 230 lbs., and he is as solid as a rock with a muscular chest and large upper arms.  For a person built like Mike who is not already an excellent player to have a decently correct swing that meets the ball with the hands forward on iron shots simply cannot have a long backswing that doesn’t get to that length without multiple errors, such as what you see here, wildly overactive legs in the backswing along with bent arms and a ton of right shoulder pull back.  Feeling the legs stay “in…

Online Lesson: Ben Munson- Working on Controlling Swing Length

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

“Hi Wayne, I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I love your analysis. In the iron videos I’m hitting a six iron. My stock ball flight is straight to slight draws. I can miss it both ways with a bad swing, usually a straight push or pull draw. Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks!” Ben is a lanky youngster (I don’t exactly know how old he is, but he is certainly much younger than I am) with an excellent golf swing that I believe simply needs to be more controlled with his irons, which…

Lesson of the Week: Fixing Stu’s Barkley Move

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

I first worked with Stu 20 or so years ago, and he was the second student I had taught who had developed the “swing yips”, notably demonstrated by Charles Barkley in his celebrity golf appearances and his work with Hank Haney on the Golf Channel (which, by the way, ended in failure).  The first guy I saw afflicted with this was a big lefty, a former baseball player, who could not understand why he would get completely stuck at the top of his swing, jerking back and forth in an effort to start forward.  This was not an every -swing…

Online Lesson: Brandon Moore PGA- Working on Lateral Hip Drive and Sidearm Throwing Motion

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

“Wayne – looking forward to your guidance here.  When I’m hitting it good it’s really good, but I have times where it gets off and my misses are maddening as the contact is very weak and the ball is almost knuckleball-ish.  Very weak with no compressed feeling or spin.  Generally, my misses are straight, and I feel like I have good face awareness, but the contact drives me crazy.” In the video we will see that Brandon has wrist and right arm problems getting from P3 to P4 as well as little or no lateral drive with his hips, issues…

Lesson of the Week: Colton Nash- Great Hands, Got to Improve Mechanics

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Colton is 16 and hasn’t been playing much golf due to Covid, but he would like to play on his high school team and hasn’t been shooting the type of scores that would get him there.  His swing has multiple issues, and that always presents a challenge for an instructor to prioritize what to start with and how to proceed.  For the viewer, this type of lesson can be quite instructive to see what items I pick out to focus on, and to be sure every teacher might have a different take.  I have always tried to look at the…

Matt Jones Swing Analysis: Classic Positions with Quiet Lower Body

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

At age 40 Matt Jones will admit that he has had an up and down PGA Tour career marked by streaks of good play (2013 to 2015) and not so good play (2016-2018), but for the most part he is a solid grinder who has played in an average of 24 PGA Tour events a year since 2008, finishing in the top 125 in half those years and amassing over $15 million in earnings.  Coming off a missed cut and a T-55 in his last 2 events Jones was probably approaching the Honda Classic with a “see what happens” attitude,…

Lesson of the Week: Jody Pelfry-Looking for Better Impact

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jody is a 2 handicap at 49 years old but struggles with ball striking (I’m sure some of you are saying “how bad could it be?”) and would love to be more consistent (who wouldn’t, although I like to tell students that you don’t want to be consistent until you are really good).  As soon as I watched Jody hit a few shots I knew I could help him.  His posture was poor with his weight on his heels, always a recipe for big pivot problems.  Sure enough, Jody’s lower body was square at impact and his hands were flipping…

Online Lesson: Jesse Droemer PGA- The Elements of Reshaping a Swing

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Jesse, an assistant professional from Texas, has played in a Tour event and is competitive in his section against other club pros.  You can see that he has a fluid swing with nice sequence, a bit on the quicker side overall which I would recommend for physically smaller golfers (Jesse is 5’8”, the same as me).  Jesse told me he would like to work the ball left to right, and in watching his swing it seems to me that his pivot is more geared to an in to out swing than one that would start the ball to the left. …

Playing for Money: Kyle Rybicki- Trying to Turn the Draw into a Fade

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Playing For Money

While there is nothing wrong with a draw, having only a draw in the bag that sometimes turns into an over-draw that ends up left of the target is not a recipe for success, especially for someone with high ball speed like Kyle.  Kyle told me right off the bat that he was missing left and wanted to know why he couldn’t a decent fade no matter how he tried.  Watching the swing in slow motion I could see that the club was behind his hands at P6, which makes it quite hard to start the ball left and move…
