Playing for Money: Mark Mielke

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Mark is a long-time club professional, most recently at the Mill River Club in New York, and also happens to be a long-time friend of mine. His playing record as a club professional is as good as it gets: he’s played in 5 PGA’s, 4 U.S. Opens, won the N.Y. State Open twice and the Met Open twice. He finished 28th in the Senior PGA Championship only a year and a half ago. Mark had a banner year in 2013, then ran into technique problems and hit proverbial wall in 2014, a year in which he described his overall play…

Online Students: Adam Shapiro

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This lesson has enough complexity that I will not try to summarize it in a few paragraphs. You’re going to watch it anyway, but one thing you will notice right away is that Adam’s iron swing returns the club to the shaft plane on the approach and at impact and follow through perfectly. If you thought that was the Holy Grail and that it would guarantee that you would flush the ball every time the rest of the video will show that there is a ton more stuff to be reckoned with here. The main focus here is on Adam’s…

Tiger Woods Swing Comparison: New vs. Old vs. Older

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is an exceptionally long video so I’m not going to summarize the whole thing except to say that I think you will find it interesting. As you know I’ve been compiling Tiger’s swings and writing (and making videos) about them for as long as he has been playing. He is easily the most compelling player alive, not only because of the greatness of his record but because he has done more with his swing than anyone else I can think of. He has been #1 in the world with at least 4 different swings, and while every player makes…

Tiger Woods at the Hero Challenge: Old or New?

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Let’s get this straight right off: Tiger Woods has a great golf swing. Now, does it do everything that I prefer? No, but then again I’m not teaching him, so no big deal there. However, from what I’ve seen of Chris Como (specifically the video he did with PhD Sasho Mackenzie) they are working in the right direction. I see a taller set up, maybe a slightly weaker grip (although nothing like with Haney), pretty close to the Haney backswing with the iron from down the line with better right loading than I’ve seen in a while from face on,…

More Tales from the Tour

By Wayne | Articles: Playing Tournament Golf

Golf is an overwhelming game. The quickest way to find this out is to qualify for a PGA Tour event, play the course for the first time on Sunday, then spend the next three days trying to perfect all the shots that will be needed come Thursday when the first round commences. Among these shots are included long, straight drives, precise irons, deft chipping and pitching, and, of course, good putting. This list sounds as though it came straight out of one of the major golf magazines. You know, the 10 page spreads on “How to Break 90” that provide…

Wayne D. Back in Action (Sort of)

By Wayne | blog

Well, I had my 4th back surgery last Tuesday the 9th, and now a week later I am able to sit up and get some things done for the website. For those of you who were unaware of my condition I will give a little background.   My back began to give me trouble way back when I was playing for the team at Wake Forest in 1976-77, but the problems were short lived and didn’t seem like much of an issue at the time. After I transferred to LSU I suffered a bizarre injury to my sternum which cost…

Why “Those Guys” are on Tour and The Rest of Us Aren’t (Although That May Not be Such a Bad Thing)

By Wayne | Articles: Playing Tournament Golf

74 – 74–148. Miss cut. While a lot of interesting things happened at that year’s Kemper Open, that’s the bottom line: 148, six over par, miss cut. I may have been the low PGA Club Professional, but I got beat by about 120 guys. “So, I guess you’re disappointed with your play”, friends, students, and members say. And while in years past that statement would have been very true, I now have a much clearer understanding of what it takes to be good enough to compete successfully at golf’s highest level, the PGA Tour. And having arrived at that understanding,…

The Right Kind of Practice

By Wayne | Articles: Becoming a Better Player

As you begin to read this article stop for a moment and think about where you are with your game. Things could be going very nicely, (you may have recently shot your best-ever round), or you could be mired in a dreadful slump, your handicap stranded on the “up” elevator. Most of us are probably somewhere in between, vacillating from good trend to bad. Whatever the case, we all have questions relating to the same subject- practice. How much should we be practicing? What should we be practicing? Where should we practice? How should we divide our practice time? How…
