At 6’4 and 260 lbs. of solid muscle (no discernible body fat) Brian, future Hall of Fame linebacker for the Chicago Bears, is an imposing figure, especially in shorts and a tight golf shirt (seems like everybody looks big in a football uniform, at least on TV). The amazing thing about Brian’s golf game is that his short game is absolutely amazing. He gets it up and down like a Tour player, and that’s any shot from anywhere around the green and inside of 100 yards. I wasn’t surprised when Kevin (Streelman) told me that Brian has built substantial short game areas at both of his main residences, Chicago in the summer and Scottsdale in the winter. As you can imagine, Brian is intensely competitive and brings all the NFL chirping and ball busting with him when he plays, especially against Kevin. Kevin gives him 3 to 4 a side (depending on the day and on who won the last bet) and they play a pretty even match. On this day Kevin shot an easy 66 but Brian got him on the front by shooting even par from the tips at Whisper Rock. He beat me straight up.
That said, Brian could really improve his long game by easing back on the overall pace of his swing (at 16/6 it’s about the fastest I’ve counted) and introducing some width in the backswing by incorporating more of his big (very big) trunk muscles, which would free up his right arm and allow him to get into more of a side arm throwing action in the downswing. I know some of you will question whether a guy built like him would have the trunk mobility to make more of a turn like that but I can assure you that while there might be some limitations (he’s not going to wind up like Ernie Els) he can still do much better with a little help on the feeling of turning his whole trunk and increasing the depth and amount of his hip movement in the backswing.
