Junior Golfer Stewie Bruce Follow-up- Kids Improve Fast

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here are some notes from Ian Bruce, Stewie’s dad, who obviously knows what he’s talking about, which is nice, because I have to write less and just say that this kid is a tremendous talent and has a great future in golf ahead of him. Overall a stronger looking movement I feel The right loading with steady head is a work in progress and we need to focus on this more.  We’ve tried the “left shoulder over the right foot” concept to exaggerate the right loading but then he drifts back to some left loading. The arm tension (especially right) at…

Online Lesson: Stewie Bruce- Excellent Junior Swing with some Typical Issues

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Stewie hasn’t been playing that long but it’s evident that he is an exceptionally good athlete and has great potential as a golfer. His set up and grip are sound, and the overall plane and sequencing of his swing are excellent. I particularly like how he lags the club and gets his hands well forward heading into impact. The main things I’d like to see Stewie work on are right loading in the backswing with his right arm and shoulder more relaxed at address and then into the takeaway. The tension in Stewie’s right shoulder leads him to pull it…

Online Lesson: 9-Year-Old Dallas Duffie- Future Star

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Dallas is the son of my long time off and on student Justin Duffie, who has been coaching Dallas with what he has learned during our lessons over the last 10 years or so. Dallas has had some great results in his junior tournaments and is a remarkable athlete in multiple sports. His swing shows great physical ability for one so young, and here we see a flaw I find common among both growing boys and girls, the inability to sequence the hips correctly to start the forward swing. Dallas so far is relatively small for his age, although that…

Lesson of the Week: Junior Golfer Conrad Luce- Working on Improving Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Conrad has gotten to a decent level as a competitive junior and is looking to up his game by improving his ball striking. He is accurate but not long, and his iron play can be erratic with mishits and shots that spin up and are affected by the wind. In the video you will see a classic flip release with Conrad keeping the clubface open well into the downswing to the point that he has no choice but to stall his hips, jump up to his toes, and do everything he can to allow the hands to rotate the clubface…

Lesson of the Week: Claire Luce- Classic Issues for Junior Golfers

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

As we watch Claire, who is 13, swing the club we can see the talent present in the motion. She will be a much more consistent and better ball striker when she improves her impact position, which you will see does not produce enough forward shaft lean to prevent some thin and fat shots from interrupting her rounds. My focus here is on the way she overstretches when completing the backswing, pushing her ribcage to the right, straightening her right knee, and pulling her right upper arm and shoulder well behind her at the top. This over extension, combined with…

Lesson of the Week: Ravi Makam

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Ravi is a 13 year old who is just starting his freshman year at my old Alma Mater, Langley High School in McLean, Virginia. Ravi is quite large for his age, and his size 14 shoes suggest he will only get a lot bigger. This is not only his first lesson with me, but his first lesson ever, and what you see to start with is what you would call “homemade”, with a lot of common elements I see in young kids left to their own devices. The beauty of this is the natural fluidness of the movement, and the…

Lesson of the Week: Chris Lane

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

You have met Chris’ brother Joey and mom Bev, and now we get a look at young Chris. It’s pretty amazing how much Chris has grown over 3 years, and that change in body dimensions has definite effects on the swing. Chris is building up some muscle now but previously he was quite thin, and it isn’t easy for skinny people to feel the connection between the upper and lower bodies that allows the swing to synchronize properly. The disconnect is apparent in the first swings Chris showed up with today, as his right leg and knee overdrive and his…

Lesson of the Week: Joey Lane Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

We have seen Joey’s swing a couple of times before, and here you can see continuing progress with his left wrist action and shaft movement in transition. I have a good feeling about Joey’s ability to build his swing into a great one, as he has a nice build for the game and a tremendous amount of power without swinging out of his shoes. The bowing of the wrist and steepening of the shaft in transition has been a serious bug for Joey and if we can continue the progress made in this lesson it should lead to heightened success.…
