Matt Kuchar Golf Swing Analysis

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Watching Matt Kuchar swing should be enough evidence for anyone paying attention to prove that just about any combination of backswing arm, hand and wrist positions can be utilized to play great golf. Just compare Kuchar with Steve Marino, for example. Could there possibly be a greater discrepancy between left arm angles at the top of the swing? You can go back to Nicklaus and Hogan and see the same diversity. That said, we wouldn’t be bothering to look at these swings if the players employing them weren’t highly successful. You have to get to the ball and control it,…

Online Students: Trent Tessler

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Trent is an accomplished player who took time off from the game and is now coming back and wanting to compete again. He is generally unsatisfied with the quality of his ball striking and has sent in a few swings to have me take a look.   The general fluidity and athletic action tell you that this is a good golfer, and it will take closer examination to diagnose the possible causes of the erratic striking. The slow motion camera reveals a few items which I see as major issues worth tackling. The first is the substandard use of the…

Lesson of the Week: Jon Zampedro

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I thought this would be an interesting lesson to look at because of Jon’s physical stature. One thing I find to be generally ridiculous in golf instruction is the idea that the swing should be tailored to body type, and that different body types should be taught differently. I believe this to be nonsense. The basic elements of a good swing are the same for thick and skinny, tall and short, male and female, weak and strong, young and old. The difference is not in what you teach, but in how you focus your priorities based on limitations (or in…

Lesson of the Week: Justin Duffie Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

We have seen Justin’s swing improve by leaps and bounds over time but I thought this was an interesting lesson because you don’t usually see drill swings produce exactly the changes you are looking for. When you have spent most of your golfing life swinging poorly as Justin has there are things late in the swing that you just aren’t going to have any clue about doing correctly. Now, however, he is in such better position approaching impact that he has a chance to drive his right side through the impact area and perhaps produce better contact and some sustain…

The Masters: Why We Watch

By Wayne | blog

I was thinking about why the Masters is such a must-see event, and I came up with this huge list of compelling reasons, which made me realize that hey, that is precisely the reason we can’t miss it. It literally has everything that makes golf the great game that it is, plus the familiarity that can only come by holding the event on the same course every year. It is the first major of the year, and after a long cold winter the anticipation has grown. We want to see the great ones go head to head and we have…

The Golf Posture Pod: A Great Teaching and Training Tool

By Wayne | Videos: Faults, Fixes and Drills

“In the box” is a phrase I have coined to highlight the importance of having the hips stay deep during the swing. If the head stays out over the ball the deepening of the hips produces an increase in posture during the swing, which means that the head of the golfer will lower both in the backswing and in the first part of the downswing. The Golf Posture Pod is a device that allows you to train this movement while visually measuring whether or not you are being successful at your attempt to deepen the hips during the swing. If…

TP&C: Ben Silverman Part 2

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

This video encompasses 2 ½ days of work with one of my most talented students, young (22) Canadian Ben Silverman. Ben is currently playing the NGA (formerly Hooters) tour, and is doing nicely. He has won multiple times already on a lesser mini-tour known as the Minor League Tour in South Florida, and is doing nicely on the NGA. His last tournament was a struggle as he made the cut and finished in the top 25 but was reduced to hitting sizable draws and felt incapable of effectively working the ball left to right. I was not surprised to hear…

Tiger at Bay Hill: Back to #1

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the changes Tiger has made in the last 3 or so years. People seem disbelieving when Tiger proclaims that a serious swing change or what turns out to be a whole pattern change takes a relatively huge amount of time to implement and then trust on the golf course. This one has taken a few years to really kick in, and now it would seem that he is back to his dominating self. It’s pretty amazing that the guy can continually reinvent himself with different techniques, and we get…

The P.A.T. Project: Student Lesson: CJ D’Arco Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

As you know if you have watched the previous videos of CJ’s swing, we are attempting to get through the Player Ability Test for the PGA of America, which is a must if you are going to continue on in your quest to become a PGA Member. Most of the requirements to be a PGA Professional are book learning (you have to attend 3 different weeks of “business school” and pass tests on the information presented, as well as completing extensive course work in workbook form), but one requirement that presents a major hurdle for any aspiring pro who is…

Lesson of the Week: Jim Farina

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jimmy is an avid golfer and a long- time member of the website who has sent me his swing for analysis a number of times in the past as well as driven down from upstate NY to spend time with me at Woodmont. I recently went to South Florida to spend a couple days with Jimmy at his clubs in Jupiter, Jupiter Hills Golf Club and Tequesta Country Club. We played each day then worked on the range down in Boca, and as you will see Jimmy has worked hard and made some significant progress with his swing.   Jimmy’s…
