Online Students: Conner Kumpula Part 6

If you’ve been with the website for any length of time you have seen this swing analyzed before, and as usual it is one of the best I work with. Connor’s ball striking has improved over time and he is well on his way to being a consistent winner in the college ranks, but is still hampered by a tendency to block a shot to the right every now and then at inopportune moments. In this video I focus on something that I struggle with in my own swing, and as I try to work through my issues now that I have more physical mobility I have a better eye for the problem. Connor initially appears to be loading and deepening the right side of his pelvis in the backswing, but as he reaches left arm parallel the right hip stops moving back and the motion moves into the left side of the pelvis, which then moves forward. This brings Connor’s upper left leg forward and as the knee rotates inward it also moves downward, which makes the leg heavy toward the front of the left foot, which in turn tilts his pelvis down and right and retards his ability to rotate to the left and clear his left hip. When the left hip can’t clear the lateral element of the movement increases, and thus the downswing arc, and the shot, can be blocked to the right. My suggestion is for Connor to make sure he completes the deepening movement of the right hip all the way into transition, which will keep the left side of the pelvis deep as well and leave it abler to clear out of the way.
