Lesson of the Week: Austin Lyons

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Austin Lyons is fascinated by the golf swing. He doesn’t get to play as much as he would like, but the attempt to master the technique that only a few are capable of drives him to practice, and to explore means of improving. Austin has been to other, more well- known instructors, but has found his way to my site and is happy to drive the 4 hours from New York City to come down for a face to face. Austin’s problems stem from a fairly typical pattern of movement wherein he keeps his upper right arm up and back…

Lesson of the Week: Arthur Slaven

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

This series of lessons is an example of the difficulties of making wholesale changes to a swing that has been formulated over many years of play and practice. Arthur is a decent player (an 8 handicap) but plays to that via a nice short game and good putting. He considers his ball striking to be substandard, and has not been able to improve much in spite of real effort with practice and lesson taking. He came to me at the suggestion of one of my long time students, Alan Appelbaum, who went from a 12 handicap to a 2 under…

Lesson of the Week: Chris Lane Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Chris has been coming along nicely with his swing as he is getting used to gaining about a foot in height over the past couple years. He is quite thin, like lots of kids his age who go through growth spurts, and has had trouble feeling the connection between the upper and lower bodies. His tendency is to get the club too deep in the backswing early, and then lift the left arm to the top while laying off the shaft, then coming down from too far away from his body. My goal here in this lesson is to get…

The P.A.T. Project: Student Lesson: CJ D’Arco Part 5

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

The P.A.T. or Player Ability Test for the PGA of America, which is a must if you are going to continue on in your quest to become a PGA Member. Most of the requirements to be a PGA Professional are book learning (you have to attend 3 different weeks of “business school” and pass tests on the information presented, as well as completing extensive course work in workbook form), but one requirement that presents a major hurdle for any aspiring pro who is not a good player is the PAT, which sets a goal of shooting 15 strokes or less…

Lesson of the Week: Justin Duffie Part 6

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Here we have our old friend, Justin Duffie, who has been working with me for just over 4 years now. His progress has been phenomenal, but he has developed a serious issue with striking the ball off of the fairway. Looking at his swing from face on you might not figure that would be a problem since he has learned to move his hands into an excellent approach position, but from down the line I noticed right away that his right arm was not straightening at all through impact. I brought up the subject of throwing and commented that you…

Lesson of the Week: DeWayne Keith

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

DeWayne is an avid player who makes a nice living caddying and working at the Old Marsh Club in Florida in the winter, and at Hudson National Golf Club in New York in the summer. He would like to get back into playing competitively, but up to now has not been satisfied with the way he is striking the ball. He has watched the website quite a bit and is friendly with recent student and mini-tour player Nick Antonelli, so he decided to make a visit.   A couple of things that struck me right away as I watched him…

Lesson of the Week: Bruce Gross Part 3

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I’ve had quite a few people suggest that I post more of the hands on work I do with students, so here I include a segment of me trying to get Bruce to feel the timing, amount, and direction of the lower body movement and how his arms should not only trail but aim themselves to approach from more across his body. The instinct to hit at the ball with the upper body moving in front of the lower causing the club to approach from out to in was evident in Bruce’s first batch of swings, but that was to…

Lesson of the Week: Bruce Gross Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

When I told one of my students about the amazing progress Bruce made in his first lesson, he reminded me that it would be the first swing I saw the next time I worked with Bruce that would decide if the lesson were really that amazing. I thought about that and reflected on how difficult it is to retain what you get in a lesson when the teacher is not always there to correct you when you begin to either revert to old bad habits or evolve into some new form of problem. I had to agree with him, so…

Lesson of the Week: Bruce Gross

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

We started off with a pitching wedge, hitting to a flag that was 95 yards out. Bruce couldn’t get within 30 yards of it, and when you see the first batch of swings it should be apparent why. I don’t know if he even realized what an amazing transformation he had just made, but I have to say I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything quite as startling as the difference in the first and last swings.

Lesson of the Week: Rokki Rogan

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

It’s always neat to see major changes in the course of a 2 or so hour lesson, and this one certainly qualifies. Rokki is a high level senior amateur who would like to compete on a national level, but has found himself falling just short of his goals due to erratic ball striking. He had been watching my videos for some time when he met Jeremy Wells, a student of mine who graduated college and is now living in Fort Myers and making his way on the mini-tour with designs to play the PGA Tour. Jeremy encouraged Rokki to accompany…
