Online Lesson: Brandon Moore PGA- Working on Lateral Hip Drive and Sidearm Throwing Motion

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

“Wayne – looking forward to your guidance here.  When I’m hitting it good it’s really good, but I have times where it gets off and my misses are maddening as the contact is very weak and the ball is almost knuckleball-ish.  Very weak with no compressed feeling or spin.  Generally, my misses are straight, and I feel like I have good face awareness, but the contact drives me crazy.” In the video we will see that Brandon has wrist and right arm problems getting from P3 to P4 as well as little or no lateral drive with his hips, issues…

Online Lesson: Jesse Droemer PGA- The Elements of Reshaping a Swing

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Jesse, an assistant professional from Texas, has played in a Tour event and is competitive in his section against other club pros.  You can see that he has a fluid swing with nice sequence, a bit on the quicker side overall which I would recommend for physically smaller golfers (Jesse is 5’8”, the same as me).  Jesse told me he would like to work the ball left to right, and in watching his swing it seems to me that his pivot is more geared to an in to out swing than one that would start the ball to the left. …

Online Lesson: Josh Bialowins PGA- Working on Pitching Technique

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Josh is an assistant professional at Champions Retreat in Augusta, Georgia, and sent these videos of him doing some around the green pitching with the report that he was developing the dreaded fear of chunking and skulling what would seem to be simple shots.  I’ve seen this problem with players of all levels, and the fix is almost always the same since the problem in technique is almost always the same as well.  I’m a big believer in the leading -edge type pitch being the go-to, or “stock” shot around the greens, unless the shot specifically calls for “using the…

Online Lesson: Mike Ballo PGA- Tightening Up an Excellent Player’s Swing

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Mike, assistant pro at Westchester CC in New York, won the New York State Open in 2019, which tells you how good he is because that must be one of the most difficult state opens to win in the entire U.S.  He is good friends with John Lamendola, and since Mike struggled a bit with his ball striking in 2020, John recommended that he send me some swings to have a look.  I try to treat every player I see with the same intent, that is to simplify the body and club movement to create better conditions for solid and…

Frank Bensel PGA: Follow-Up- Talented Players Make Quick Changes if they are Not Too Complicated

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

These follow-up swings were taken 6 days after I sent him his first analysis.  The video speaks for itself: like the title says, good players can make changes quicker and easier than not-so-good players.  However, the only real test as to whether the changes were good ones is in competition.  We will see how Frank plays in the future.

Online Lesson: Frank Bensel PGA- Top Notch Club Professional Asks for a Look/See

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Frank is 52 and a 3-time National PGA Assistant’s Champion from the Metropolitan Section, arguably the toughest section in the country when it comes to quality of players.  Frank is always in the mix at the club pro level, but he was having some ball striking issues and gave me a ring, although we had never worked together in the past.  Without a doubt, Frank has an excellent golf swing, and my job is to point out items that in my opinion might be causing some of his inconsistency.  The first thing I notice here is Frank’s posture, which I…

Lesson of the Week: Mike Haase PGA- Wanting Answers about Lower Body Movement

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Mike flew down to Florida from Illinois in the hope that I could answer some long-standing questions he had about the way he used his lower body during his swing.  I could see right away that his concerns were well founded when I watched his right glute lose depth in the backswing and the left side of his pelvis move well forward, almost what could be considered a “death move” that leads to the loss of posture and an inability to rotate effectively through impact.  We discussed at length my thoughts on right loading, hip depth, and how the hips…

Lesson of the Week: Paul Oglesby PGA- Overcoming 5 Back Surgeries

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Paul may be the first player I’ve taught who has had more back operations than I have, and it shows in the swing he brought with him when he visited me in Boca for an in-person lesson.   Paul has an excellent record as a player having competed in the British Open and two U.S. Opens in the 1980’s as well as winning the Pennsylvania State Open in 1994, but the golf swing is tough enough without dealing with constant pain and stiffness, and the last 20 years have brought diminishing returns as a player although Paul has continued his teaching…

Jordan Spieth Pitching: Video for Tony Romo

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos: Swing Analysis

Back in January of 2018 I played in the Isleworth Invitational, partnering with Tony Romo. Tony had been playing quite a bit with Jordan Spieth, and we had a great time practicing on the fabulous short game area at the club with me showing Tony some things and Tony sharing with me some of Spieth’s secrets to his amazing pitching game. I had recorded Spieth off a couple of televised events, focusing on his short game, one of which was the Hero World Challenge, also at Isleworth, where Spieth blitzed the field while shooting an incredible 26 under par (Isleworth…
