Online Students: George Lyall

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

“I am hitting pulls, fades & slices. Would like to get rid of the flip at impact and have lower hands at impact. Not sure if this is possible? Regards George” – George is very squatted and his balance is well back into his heels, which makes it quite hard to maintain posture and create space for the right arm to get in front of the chest, which is an important aspect in getting the hands more forward at impact as well as closer to the body.

Online Students: John Lamendola Part 11 Hitting Draws and Fades

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This video gives us a nice primer on hitting draws and fades and what the swings should look like when the camera angle stays the same for both shots. Also as you watch the video you’ll see that I disagree with John’s guesses as to why the hybrid impact looks a bit flippy. His head stays in its box through the impact area nicely, and he is certainly plenty rotary as his left knee disappears from view just as his left arm gets to parallel to the ground in the forward swing. What I do note here is that…

Online Students: Mark Armstrong

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is a good example of how important the set-up is in how the golf swing functions, and how posture and balance can determine how the body moves once the swing gets started. Mark has exaggerated knee flex for sure, but most importantly he starts with his weight well back into his heels. As soon as I see a set-up like this I expect the general movement of the pivot to be forward toward the ball, and keeping the hips in the box almost an impossibility.

Online Students: Ben Leon

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Ben has an excellent swing that appears to have everything in order, except that he can’t seem to figure out why he can’t get his hands more forward heading into impact and feels like he is not compressing the ball the way he would like to. It would be a normal reaction to this feeling to try to drive the right elbow further and further forward so that the hands would be driven in front of the ball and the shaft would lean more forward as well.

Online Students: Rick James Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

It is not surprising that Rick is having a bit of a struggle with the idea of how to square up the face after he opens it more in the backswing as the face is still starting back well closed. I believe Rick needs to concentrate on opening the toe of the club immediately in the takeaway with his left hand and wrist. This is of utmost importance to Rick’s pattern

Online Students: Stuart Keay

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Stuart’s swing gives us another classic example of the overuse of the right upper arm and shoulder to complete the backswing turn. I have always favored a toe up position for the clubhead at P2, but after years of analyzing swings and watching closed face backswings produce multiple right arm positions I can now explain more succinctly why. If you get into a mirror with a club from down the line and take the club back to left arm parallel with little rotation in the forearms you will find that the right palm will continue to face more toward the ground and the right shoulder will begin to stress as it tries to gain height.

Online Students: Scott Sayre

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Scott has a great looking swing that is well sequenced, but it runs into trouble in transition when he flexes his knees toward the ball after twisting his hips toward the target. His upper legs get so bent under him that to get his right arm in front of him his hands and arms must move well out away from his body and thus approach impact from an extremely high position. My suggestions are to set up with his balance a bit more out over the ball toward the balls of the feet, and then to create a station with shafts set up as obstacles to encourage him to change his downswing pattern.

Online Students: John Krystynak Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

John is having a great deal of trouble changing his takeaway, and he is not alone. Trigger mechanisms are a bitch to change and when you watch John’s swing here versus his last online lesson you can see that while he has made progress with his pivot movement his takeaway is still a big problem. I focus the slow-motion video on John’s hands as he prepares to move the club into the backswing: he grips, then lets go, then grips again just as he moves the clubhead back.
