2012 Senior PGA: I’m In!

By Wayne | blog

It was a long day and I got off to a rough start, but it all worked out (except for the mashed rental car and the lost credit card) and I’m good to go for the tournament. I began to have this sick feeling that I wouldn’t get in, even though I was down to second alternate on Monday morning. I figured I had to give it shot at that point, so I cancelled 4 full days of lessons and got an absurdly expensive flight to Detroit which left at 6:25 AM this morning, which meant up at 3:30 AM.…

Heading to the Senior PGA Championship

By Wayne | blog

Back in October I finished 40th in the National Senior Club Professional Championship, which was 2 shots out of qualifying for the Senior PGA Championship, and one shot out of a playoff for alternate spots. The tournament was somewhat local, so after I finished I drove home and figured my chances to play in another major went out the window with my bogey on the 72nd hole. Then, about 2 months ago, I got a packet of information in the mail from the PGA telling me that I was the 6th alternate among club pros and that if I sent…

No Instruction is Good Instructuon

By Wayne | blog

Link to Sally Jenkins’ Article. Wayne’s Response: Sally: I have often read and admired your columns for their depth and thoughtfulness, but I was shaking my head when you gave traction to Brandel Chamblee and his personal war on golf instruction in today’s column. There are a few things you should have considered before taking sides with Chamblee’s notion that no instruction is better than any instruction when it comes to the attempt to improve at golf. First of all, Chamblee is a golf loser, a quitter, beaten down by the game and forced to give it up due to…

I Refuse to Quit

By Wayne | blog

In the midst of the war that is an 18-hole round of competitive golf it is not hard to think about turning and running when things aren’t going well. Think about all the announcers on television: most were very good or great players. All of them quit voluntarily (although Nobilo I think could not overcome an injury problem). Since they were good, then quit, you would have to figure that they began to play consistently worse than they were used to, and after a while just couldn’t handle it anymore. It is hard to get your head around your deteriorating…

You need a few things to be a successful player

By Wayne | blog

You need a few things to be a successful player: I usually state a number but I always think of something else so if I say “you need 3 things” it turns out to be 4 or 5, then I have to go back and change the beginning. So we’ll just leave it open ended and talk about some of the things you need, realizing that whatever I list is probably not all inclusive.   First, you need dedication. Without it, the game and the quest for mastery is too frustrating and disappointing. You could write a book about it,…

“Bubba’s “No Technique” Win Thrills Chamblee”

By Wayne | blog

Pure talent is a remarkable thing. Most times you find that someone like Bubba is actually a hard worker, just not in a conventional golf sense where you would think to find him grinding on the range. My guess is that he regularly played 36 holes a day or more when he was a kid, and competed every chance he had. We’re talking thousands of hours of golf, and in his case it was obviously the right thing to do. Some people are not built for lessons or any kind of technique approach. The problem is that if the career…

Haney and Tiger: My Two Cents

By Wayne | blog

I’m not sure why I would expect Hank Haney to be above any certain kind of behavior, but nevertheless I find myself not buying into Haney’s rationalizations regarding the writing and publishing of his Tiger tell-all “The Big Miss”. To sum it up, the book shouldn’t have been written. A golf instructor is many things to a student, but surely one is that of an unconditional supporter who is caring and loyal to the player. While there is a relationship the instructor will never gossip about the player. After the relationship ends the instructor with character will continue to observe…

Results from the Emerald Dunes Invitational

By Wayne | blog

Well, it was a fun two days of golf at a fabulous course, but my partner and I did not finish in the money. We shot 71-71 and beat a few teams, while the winners were at 65-65. It was an impressive field of players, with Senior Tour players Mike Goodes, Lonnie Nielsen and Gary Hallberg, and top flight club pros such as Darrell Kestner, Craig Thomas, Mark Brown, Frank Bensel, Mark Mielke and Danny Balin among others.   Assessing my own play, I would have to say that the event was a success on a couple of levels. First,…
