Online Lesson: Will Madden- Using Ground Pressure to Help Transition Issues

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Watching Will’s swing the first thing I noticed even at full speed was the initial widening of his wrist angles in transition, a movement that has been called “casting” but with the newer anatomical descriptions is now “ulnar deviation” of the left wrist and “radial deviation” of the right wrist. Looking for a reason that this is happening I start at the beginning of his swing and suggest that he center his set up rather than start with more pressure on his left side. In the takeaway I’d like to see more extension away from center with the right arm…

Online Lesson: Justin Baker- Improved Posture Down the Line, Now Addressing Face On

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

In this video you will see Justin change his posture quite a bit from more erect and heel oriented to one more out over the ball and what I would describe as more “athletic”, with pressure more forward toward the balls of the feet and more bent over from the waist. I like to call this a more “ready” position at address, much like a tennis player waiting for a serve, or a shortstop waiting for the batter to swing, or maybe a runner in a distance race with hundreds of competitors lined up waiting for the gun to go…

Online Lesson Follow-Up: Thomas Petric- Improving his Pitching

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

In this follow-up lesson video, you will see that Thomas has made some nice improvement in his technique based on our last lesson. His tendency to dip down and scoop under the ball has been mostly eliminated as he tries to stay taller and forward lean the shaft at impact. His face on look at impact is much better, but I would still like to see him get his hands more forward when the shaft is parallel to the ground in the forward swing so that he could use less of the bounce and achieve more consistently solid contact. To…

Playing for Money: Duncan Nix, PGA- Lack of Hip Depth Causing Steep Approach

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Message to Wayne I have put a driver and iron swing in the above links. I am a club professional but play mini tours and such trying to continue to develop my game and take it as far as I can. Before I turned pro, I was a +4 handicap. Played in college where I finished at Georgia Southwestern. Struggling ball flight is mostly a pull with the irons, with the occasional push cut. I tend to get steep divots where the toe digs too much. Driver tends to be inconsistent, but a lot of length of the tee averaging…

Brian Muench Online Lesson and Follow-Up: -Addressing Right Arm Issues

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I met Brian when I worked at Woodmont CC and he was an assistant pro. He has since gotten his amateur status back and had an exciting win in 2018 when he prevailed in the Oak Hill (Rochester, NY) club championship. He is getting close to playing some quality golf and would like to compete on a State Am/ State Open level. He has always had wrestled with the problem you will see here, where the right arm bends and pulls back in transition, leaving it unable to straighten as it heads from P4 to P6, bringing the hands toward…

Playing for Money: Austin Kendziorski-Back at It

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Austin has taken an extended break after turning pro last year, first due to poor play and then the Coronavirus, but now is back at it and trying to improve. Austin is incredibly strong (I watched him hit 4 drives that flew 330 when I played 9 holes with him), but that amount of power can get you into trouble when you don’t have control of it. I have always wanted Austin to make his swing more compact, taking advantage of his strength knowing that even if he gears it down he will be plenty long and always have the…

Online Lesson: Justin Baker- Focusing on Posture

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Posture has a huge effect on what happens when the player starts to move, and in just about every case where I see a slumped, heel oriented setup I suggest something more athletically angled and “ready”, with the upper body out over the ball and the foot pressure toward the balls of the feet (but not on the toes). I like to see the player bend from the hip joints so that the pelvis has some downward tilt to it, and I use the analogy of just about any sport where the player needs to be able to move quickly…

Playing for Money: Matt Shubley-Needing Earlier Left Forearm Supination in the Downswing

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

As usual Matt’s swing looks quite good (he is a very good player), especially since he hasn’t been able to get out and practice due to the virus, but his tendency to get the club behind his hands at P6 is still one of his main issues. Over time we have added lateral movement to transition and the forward swing and have almost eliminated his crossing the line at the top. With the club on plane and the shaft flattening in transition, Matt has to now focus on rolling the left arm down the chest by supinating the forearm earlier…

Online Lesson: David Baker-Working on Steep Approach and Flip Release

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

“I took a lesson from you in 2011. Glad you reached out with the on- line offer. I hit driver and 7 iron. My misses start right and stay right. I like it the feel of hitting a fade but struggle with my release. Lastly, I don’t feel using the ground efficiently. When I try and push off my back leg my upper body jumps ahead of the shot.”   David exhibits nice motion and fluidity and sequences his swing well. He moves the handle toward the ball starting down the way I like to see it, but it happens…

Online Lesson: Thomas Petric- Overswinging at the Top Causing Sequence and Path Issues

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Hi Wayne,   “Per our lesson from last year, I’m trying to shorten the backswing to prevent my hands from lifting at the top of the swing and the club crossing the line. I think my sequencing is still off.   Also, as you will notice in the downswing, my release is early causing inconsistent impact.   I included a couple extra videos of a SW from 90 yards and a 30 yard pitch in case you would like to see my swing from different distances and maybe find some common themes from the short shots to the long ones.”   Thomas is…
