Lesson of the Week: Chris Trotter- Working on Hip Depth

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

“I’m Chris Trotter, I’m a member, just joined a month ago, and this is my first swing analysis for the year. I’m open to more lessons moving forward but would love a general diagnosis and hear suggestions of where I should go from here. About me: I live in San Francisco, I’m 6’2 (225 lbs.) 36 yr. (8 handicap). Average drive: 300 yards Average 8 iron: 165 yards I’ve been playing on and off for years. I’m a hockey player and have tried to keep my swing athletic. I’ve just started taking lessons for the first time ever…

Lesson of the Week: Michael Harris-Working on Set-Up Routine and Posture

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Michael is a professional musician who understands the importance of technique and preparation, and thus was receptive to the idea of using a consistent procedure for achieving proper posture and ball position, both key aspects of consistent ball striking. The side-by-side views of before and after are striking, and most anyone can see the benefits of using a routine to get the “easy” part of the game, the set-up, in order before moving to the hard part, the swing. A new set-up routine may seem too detailed and slow, but after practicing you will find it takes no longer…

Lesson of the Week: Bill Donovan- Setting up a Station for Takeaway and Downswing Improvement

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Bill is a low handicap player at my club who has started the year with some ball striking inconsistencies.  Slowing down Bill’s swing reveals a few issues that would be difficult to address all at once, which is why I like to set up a station using headless shafts to create a pattern and shape change as opposed to simply trying to fix one item.  Bill’s takeaway has gotten inside with the face closed, which leads to the right shoulder getting bunched up at the top with the shaft across the line.  As he shallows the club his left…

Online Lesson: Liam Hermansson- Excellent Swing Looking for Better Face Control

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Hi Wayne, my name is Liam Hermansson from Sweden. I go to college in Tennessee and just finished my sophomore year. My dad has followed you for many years and is a big fan. He thought we should try this opportunity to get advice from another pair of eyes. I play good at times but have struggled for the most part in the last year. Face control is my biggest problem right now, just very inconsistent, and unpredictable. I hit a lot of good shots, but the bad ones are really bad.   Liam’s swing is so good that…

Lesson of the Week: Brian McCarthy- Working on Wedge and Driver Basics

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Brian is a long hitter who lacks control and whose wedge game is poor. We start with the wedge, and immediately I see that with his setup, grip, and clubface at address he has little chance to flight a consistent short shot of any distance. I suggest weakening his grip and moving the ball position to the middle of the stance or just forward of middle rather than well back off the right foot. Along with the more neutral grip I have him square the clubface at address, as he has been setting it closed. The changes…

Online Lesson: David Trungale: Working on Posture and Clubface Control to Hit a Consistent Fade

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Wayne, how have you been?  Mark Wilson’s coach, Dave Rasmussen, sadly passed away recently here in Wisconsin.  You both have been super helpful with my swing progress.  At any rate, is my club lean looking better from face-on ‘reducing it’ to get more loft?  Your lesson from 2021 provided some great insight on this. From DTL, I’ve tried to allow my right elbow to fold up a bit more.  Let me know what needs improvement + anything that looks ok.  Your general analysis and lines are always first-rate.  Kind Regards, David David’s swing is looking great. His main…

Online Lesson: Kade Meguffin- Needing Width and Swing Length Control

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Hi Wayne, I’ve been a big fan of your video analysis videos on YouTube for a while. I’d love to have you take a look at my swing. I sent you two videos of FO and DL for both a driver and a 6 iron. Hopefully at least a couple of the videos are decent enough for you to use. I’ve been a slightly better than average player for about 10 years. I shoot low to mid 80’s most of the time. When I can keep the ball in play and make some putts, I can shoot 76. Only…

Lesson of the Week: Mark Mannion-Working on a More Vertical Swing Shape

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Lesson of the Week: Mark Mannion: Working on a More Vertical Swing Shape I only see Mark a few times a year as he lives in New York and visits his father at Peninsula whenever he can get away. His ball striking has improved markedly over the last couple years and here I stick with the general idea of a more up and down swing shape considering his tendency to get flat and a bit laid off at the top. The first thing I suggest is for him to quiet his trigger action, which in this case has him…

Lesson of the Week: Mike Jones- Working on Steeper Shoulder Turn and Freer Hip Movement

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Mike drove 4 hours to spend two hours with me two days in a row, which gave us time to work on multiple items in his swing. Mike suffered from erratic driving, with most of his misses being  big pulls to the left. In order to fix the ball flight Mike decided to swing more from the inside, and when we looked at the first videos of his swing it was apparent that he had way over-corrected, and it was possible that he had never come from the outside at all and that his “pulls” were actually smother hooks that…

Lesson of the Week: Rick Moreau-Working on Increasing Lateral Movement and Shallowing the Downswing

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Rick is a low single digit handicapper who produces a nice impact but often feels as though he is “hanging back” and unable to get fully to his left side in the downswing and through impact, causing some pulls and weak right shots. The video shows that Rick stays almost stationary on his right foot well past impact, and that his hips have only moved an inch or two forward of where they started. From down the line it is apparent that Rick has a bit too much of the hands out move without enough flattening of the club,…
