TP&C: NFL Great Ozzie Newsome- Changing Backswing Patterns and Adding Forward Swing Work

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Having semi-retired as GM of the Baltimore Ravens Ozzie now has a lot more time to devote to his golf, a game at which he struggles, quite frustrating for a world class Hall of Fame athlete. Ozzie has definite physical limitations with his replaced left hip and highly developed upper trunk and shoulder muscles that somewhat restrict his mobility, but his size and strength allow him to make up for lack of swing length with better technique. We have worked extensively on his grip, but he still tends to want to re-grip the club with his right hand in transition…

Online Lesson: John Mannion- Encouraging Face Rotation in the Backswing to Help Right Arm Movement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

My two most common misses for full swing are 1) pull / hook and 2) push slice, in that order.   Push slices occur much less often when using the shorter backswing that you see here. It’s short compared to my previous overswing, but probably still long enough. So, shortening the swing has been a way to reduce the number of times I get blocked.   But the pull hook still occurs with this “short” backswing. It’s not uncommon to hit a good drive up the middle and pull hook an approach shot into trouble.   Regarding ball flight, distance…

Jazz Janewattananond- Steep to Flat to Steep

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

When I first saw Jazz hit a shot on the telecast of the PGA Championship at Bethpage, I had a flashback to my student Willy Wilcox, whose quirky looking swing that I saw for the first time on television in 2015 fascinated me immediately. Willy’s swing has a distinct pattern: hands and arms inward early in the backswing, shaft moving more vertical mid-backswing, then a hard kick to flatten the shaft in transition. The overall effect was whip-like, and the freedom of the foot movement and huge right-side bend through impact was distinctive. Jazz’s swing has a lot of the…

Online Lesson: John Krystynak- Still Working on Takeaway Technique and Right Arm Movement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Working on takeaway of course and trying not to pull back with right shoulder. As that improves, I get a decent number of swings where the club isn’t heavily crossed over. Coming down, I have a hard time getting club to shallow and these swings are pretty realistic as to what happens on course. Slightly steep, clubhead and shaft over hands and right arm. Flight ends up very slight cut. All very playable, but still baffling to me as to why I can’t really get the club shallow. John has improved his takeaway, but it still has enough issues as…

Lesson of the Week: Steve Rogers- Trying to Stay Out Over the Ball and Clear the Left Hip

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Steve is a high level senior amateur (played in last year’s U.S. Senior Am) but has been fighting pain in his right hip and lower back. We have always worked on Steve’s tendency to back up his upper body and come out from under himself with his lower, leading to late squaring of the hips and a right shoulder that drops down into impact without enough forward movement, the result usually being a fat iron shot or a pull as he runs out of right arm and is forced to utilize a throw type release. Here I suggest that Steve…

Playing for Money: Lucia Polo- Striving for More Compressed Irons

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Lucia is 23 years old and 2 years out of a college career playing for the University of Tennessee. She is now in her second stint on the Symetra Tour, the LPGA’s version of the Web.Com tour. This is my second lesson with Lucia, and in the first lesson I saw some real potential as she incorporated my suggestions quickly during the lesson. She tends to move her body quite a bit to the right in the backswing, then never quite recovers with her upper body while her lateral hip movement nets out at about zero. Being this far back…

Online Lesson: Fuad Sulayman: Adding Pace to the Swing and Stretch to the Backswing

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Hi Wayne- sending you face on and down the line of a 46-degree wedge, hopefully incorporating some of the concepts you introduced me to when I sent my swing to you last year. Feel as though I may have gotten too outside on takeaway and flat at the top as a result of really bowing my right wrist at top to try to create a flatter plane and shallower path on transition. That only seems to have exaggerated my signature move which is a steeping move on transition. So now I am thinking steeper shoulder plane, more inside on the…

Lesson of the Week: Peter Slaven Correcting Overly In to Out Path

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Peter is a high-level amateur who would like to sharpen his ball striking skills to get to an even higher level where he would be competitive on a state and national level. He has plenty of power, carrying his driver 280-290 yards, but tends to hook the ball overall and to miss too many irons right and left, the culprit being his in to out club path. I see his right arm continuing to deepen in transition which keeps his upper arm behind him in the forward swing. Peter loads to the right but never recovers his upper body position,…

Wayne D. Making Modifications and Playing Better

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I’ve been feeling better and getting stronger and have had time to practice so it was nice to see the work pay off in the Middle Atlantic Section Match Play qualifier on a tough track just outside of Richmond, Va. I shot 2-under 70 to place second in a field of 51, 11 of whom were heading to the National Championship being contested this week in South Carolina. My ball striking was decent, short game and putting outstanding. In this video I show and talk about the changes I have made, which for the most part take me closer to…

Tiger Woods: Huge Changes from 2010 to 2019

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

If you want to see how much Tiger has changed his approach to his golf swing over the past decade just watch here and note the change in his pre-swing rehearsal. In 2010 at his winter event in California he is seen starting his downswing rehearsal with his hands moving behind him, his left arm pulling down his chest, and the shaft staying steep and always over his right arm. In 2019 at Augusta we see him swinging his hands out above the ball in transition (people would call that “over the top”) with the shaft laying back. I always…
