Swing Analysis: Sergio Garcia

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

One of the best ball-strikers in the game, Sergio has been out of the winner’s column on the PGA Tour since the Player’s Championship 4 years ago. He ended that string with a nice win at the Wyndham Championship last week, aided by his usual strong long game and some much improved putting. Here we look at Sergio’s swing from 1999 to the present, and we see that while he has modified his swing somewhat it still features his signature moves wherein he creates tremendous lag, or angle between his left arm and the club shaft in the forward swing,…

Student Lesson: Steve Bohreer

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

It is both surprising and gratifying when a student exhibits improvement in a short period of time. I never expect to see full swings incorporate the kind of major changes that are many times called for and suggested by my instruction. I like to see evidence of change when we use the video multiple times, but when there are combinations of things to fix up it is extremely difficult to put them together and make swings that show a large improvement in the overall motion and technique. That is what makes this video so special, in that Steve showed up…

Blues Jam (with video)

By Wayne | blog

You’ve gotten a taste of Wayne’s blues harp in the post “Swing Analysis: In the Lab: Swing Observations”. Here we have Wayne jamming out two full songs (blues harp and vocals) playing with a live band in an open jam format. The rest of the band is as follows: Scott Martin – Piano, Bruce Martin – Organ, Henry Kurosaka – Guitar, Scott Andrews – Drums, Paul Groover – Bass. All the players attended Langley High School in McLean, Virginia in the 1970’s. The first song is the instrumental “Relaxin” by Big Walter Horton and the second is a Sonny Boy…

You Can’t Fail if You Don’t Try

By Wayne | blog

It is not hard to see why a teaching pro who achieves a decent level of success (meaning a busy lesson book) would play less competitive golf or stop playing altogether. First there is the opportunity cost, as missing a day of work could mean more $ than finishing first in whatever tournament there is to play in that causes you to miss that day. Second is the price of entry and travel expenses, which you never hear about when the Tour is discussed. For a club pro paying a couple hundred dollar entry and then finding a hotel room…

Online Students: Tom Richards Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Tom is doing some nice work toward his main goal of un-steepening the shaft in his downswing. In this video he tries out the takeaway-stop drill and I have a chance to compare it side by side with his full motion swing. The differences would be subtle to the eye (probably couldn’t pick any out) but are obvious once the lines are drawn. You can see what a major difference a couple of inches of depth in the hips makes to the overall motion and approach angles of the swing, as Tom’s drill swing gets much closer to what…

Online Students: Jason Huguet

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here I give you the opportunity to stop the video and do your own analysis. I don’t think it would be such a great idea to have all of you post your analyses on the site as that might make Jason’s head explode, so for this one you can discuss elements of how mine was different but don’t post the whole thing.

Chamblee Labels Tiger “One-Dimensional” and says he “Lacks Versatility” (with video)

By Wayne | blog

You might think from the title of this video that I have created fictional commentary from our man Brandel Chamblee to make him look ridiculous. As you will see, this is not the case, as Brandel does a fine job without my having to make up anything. Face it, there is no one on the planet with enough balls to say Tiger Woods “lacks versatility”, and that is not because no one other than Chamblee is courageous enough to speak the truth, it’s because the statement is so outrageously asinine that no one else would ever even think to say…

Online Students: Ryan Groves Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Ryan has been a faithful member of the website for quite some time, and he has done some very nice work on his swing, especially when it is viewed from down the line. He compresses nicely on the backswing, bring the club up smartly on the shaft plane, and gains depth with the hips while moving symmetrically with the legs and knees. His shoulder, arm, and wrist angles are all quite good as he approaches the top of the swing, but unfortunately the top doesn’t’ come soon enough and the swing goes back overly long, causing some sequence problems and…

The Brandel Watch

By Wayne | blog

I feel as though I am doing a great disservice to everyone by not paying more attention to our man Brandel Chamblee and his incessantly negative commentary regarding Tiger Woods, Sean Foley, teaching in general, and whatever other subjects he might stumble upon. The fact is that I don’t have time to watch The Golf Channel when Brandel is on, so I am appealing to the WDGLC members to send me clips of Brandel when you catch him saying something that you think I might find interesting and worthy of my own comment and/or rebuttal. Chamblee has no counterpoint to…
