Swing Analysis: Davis Love III

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

One of the best players in the modern era, Davis Love has won 20 PGA Tour events including a major championship, the PGA in 1997. He has won mostly with his long game, and has been hampered over the years with wedge and short putting issues (if you can have 20 wins and be “hampered”). That just suggests that Love, had he been even close to the putting it like Nicklaus or the wedging it like Kite would have won many more majors and would probably be up there with the greatest players ever. Here, however, we focus on the…

On Going Out To Practice

By Wayne | Articles: Becoming a Better Player

So you’ve figured out your schedule for the day and what do you know, you have time to get out to the range for some practice. The first thing to do is to decide how to budget the time you have. There is no set way to divide up your practice time. You need to assess what has been going on with your golf game up to this moment and address what most needs to be addressed. If you are hitting the ball terribly, by all means plan on spending most of your time hitting balls. If your short game…

Student Lesson: Ben Lieberman

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Here is a new young student of mine named Ben Lieberman. Ben is a good size kid and can play well having won his club’s Jr. Championship. His dad was a bit suspect of his technique and thought it could be improved so Ben could become an even better player. In this video we see that Ben has some things I really like to see in a swing; deep hips, compression in the backswing, etc. Ben also came in with a strong grip and tight, locked-up, arms at address and the tight arms would prove to be a bit of…

TaylorMade Invitational: Cabo San Lucas: Tournament Report

By Wayne | blog

I had two goals heading to Cabo to play 6 straight days (2 practice rounds, 4 tournament rounds): first, I wanted to be able to play without ending up gimping around and being miserable because my back didn’t hold up, and second, I wanted to play well and earn some extra cash. I ended up feeling pretty decent after it was all over, which is a victory of sorts, and I shot 71-71-73-73 – 288, which is even par, not so bad until you consider that the winner was 24 under and the leading senior was 15 under. What you…

Myths and Misconceptions: How Conventional Wisdom Keeps You From Getting Better

By Wayne | Articles: Becoming a Better Player

In the course of a day’s teaching I always marvel at the utter uniqueness of each case I deal with. Each golfer that comes to me for help has an entirely different personality, physical makeup, personal history, level of athletic ability, and learning capability. Each hour I reboot the computer and start over with a fresh batch of swing flaws, which may start right with the grip and set-up, then proceed to takeaway problems, backswing problems, transition problems, downswing problems, and impact problems. The game is so difficult, and the technique so complex, that literally no one is without something…

Wayne D. in Cabo San Lucas for the TaylorMade Invitational Day 1 and 2

By Wayne | blog

Not much to say about this one except that this is a seriously nice place with two excellent courses and perfect weather. I played much better today (Tuesday) on the Desert Course than I did yesterday on the Ocean, and I show you a swing from each day. And after the round Valerie is there to serve up the ice cold Corona. With lime.

TP&C: Lenny Mattiace Part 2

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Lenny and I have been working together for about a month now and I was able to get together with him again (3rd time face to face) for a day and a half down in Tampa. We played 9 holes at World Woods, and then worked on the range there for 3 hours or so, then the next day went out to TPC Tampa Bay and played a few holes again and also worked on the range for another 3-4 hours. This video is a compilation of the swings I shot during that time, and we ended up feeling good…

Swing Analysis: Wayne D. From the Vault – 1981 to 2002

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This isn’t so much a swing analysis as it is a compilation of my swings throughout a 20 year period. I got my first video camera (appropriated from my first wife’s father) back in 1981 and started taping my swing, not really knowing much about what I was looking at, except that I was a big fan of Tom Watson and read Hogan’s Five Lessons religiously. In the first batch of swings you can see the Watson influence, and after 2 major back operations you can see how I opted for a more rotary Hogan type move. The changes I…

Online Students: Justin Baker

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Justin has made nice progress since starting with the website, and even made a trip down to see me in July, where we got some nice work in. He is still struggling with the transition move, and I noticed right away that he had left out the line on top of his head, which, in Justin’s case, happens to be one of the most important lines to be aware of. As you can see, Justin lowers nicely in the backswing with the loading action taking his head downward a bit, then, instead of lowering again to get the lower body…

Online Students: Brandon Nagler Part 3

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Brandon has made some significant changes in his swing so far, and now is in position to make a major breakthrough in his technique. There wasn’t much he could about getting his right arm to move the right way and his hands more forward at impact until he got rid of some of his movement off the ball into a tilted back position as he approached the top of his swing. Now that he has stayed relatively more centered over the ball he should be able to use the sidearm throwing analogy and begin to lean the shaft more forward…
