When I do swing analysis of a Tour winner (Herman won the 2020 Wyndham Championship) I like to get on PGATour.com and check out his stats, not just for this year but for his entire Tour career. Herman’s stats were a big surprise: in 11 years he has made the top 125 just 4 times with a best of 42nd in 2016, winning just over $2 million, while in 2018 he won just $46 K. Looking at his overall stats the numbers aren’t particularly good: decent driver of the ball but his strokes gained everywhere else (approach, around the green, putting) are at the bottom of the Tour. However, and it’s a big however, is that when he gets it going, he wins. I’m surprised his stats are what they are because I really like his swing. His pivot movement is excellent, and I love the space he creates for his right arm in the approach to impact. I’m almost positive his grip is on the weak side as he creates a large amount of left wrist flexion right from the takeaway and increases it into impact with the clubface never looking closed. Maybe after this latest win he can keep up this high level of play.
