Online Lesson: Harrison Murphy- Controlling Immense Power

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I watched this swing and then texted Harrison as I needed to know more about his game before I made any comments. You will see why, as it is exceptional and appears to be quite powerful. However, I wasn’t quite prepared for the text I got back from him:

“Played 10 years. Game this summer has been quite good. Played well this past 2 months until the past week or so. Tendency is to lose the feeling of a good pivot and then the swing gets steep. My SS (swing speed) is 136-138 (!!), BS (ball speed) 200-205 (!!) and average drive carry around 350, 380 total (!!!). My club set up:
Dr 380
3w 350
41 325
61 285
7i 260
81 245
Strong 9i 225
Weak 9i 205
Strong PW 185
Weak PW 170
Gap Wedge 150
56 135
60 110

Now, I have no reason not to believe what Harrison is saying here, and I know that distance like this can be a huge advantage if it is controlled. My advice to Harrison is to cut back on his swing length and his distances (other than when he wants to let it out) and concentrate on ball control, which is essential to make it as a professional. Harrison is an amateur (plays to a +5) and might think about turning pro if he improves, which is why I suggested I did. I’m looking forward to seeing Harrison’s follow up swings and some tournament results.
