Online Students: Jim Spalding

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Wayne:   “I have struggled with early extension, have tried to stay in the box. Recently have tried a drill with the stick (shaft) in ground between my legs, with some improvement. Also worked on getting the shaft on the downswing below the backswing plane. I am still inconstant with solid contact.”   Thanks – Jim   Jim has a nice setup his weight looks forward on the feet and in a good position to start his swing. The first thing I notice is that Jim’s swing is a bit slow at a ratio of about 40/10 which works out…

Improvement: David Holmes

By Wayne | Improvement

We’re going to start posting notification of improvements and this is a great one to start with, and make sure to send in your own stories of improvement too.   Wayne,   Just wanted to let you know I just made it though 1st stage of Web.com Q school in Atlanta, GA. I shot -7 for the week and hit the ball substantially better than I have all season. There is still a good bit of room for improvement to be made in my swing, but I really like where we are headed with everything. I had a consistent miss/ball…

Playing for Money: Joey Latowski

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

I think you will find this an interesting lesson as you watch the unique shaft progression in Joey’s swing. He starts a bit on his heels, and then moves much deeper into the heels by rocking backwards at the start of the takeaway. This leads to a radically laid off position at the top, and he is left with steepening the downswing immediately from the top. This movement leaves his right upper arm well behind his side, and as a result he can’t really get his hands far enough in front of the ball to deliver a blow with enough…

Online Students: Tim Gash

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Hello Wayne,   My name is Tim Gash. I’ve just started playing golf again after a 7 year layoff (medical training). I have a fair bit of downtime and am looking to rekindle my game. When I was younger I was a scratch player, now I’m playing to about a 6 handicap (8 rounds of golf since writing my licensing exam this fall). I’m struggling off the tee with some blocks and some terrible snap hooks. I’ve got a long winter ahead to make some changes and I want to regain my form and become a more consistent driver of…

When Last Is Not So Bad

By Wayne | Articles: Competition

My wife was worried. I had just finished my two rounds at the Booz-Allen Classic, the PGA Tour event that used to be held at Congressional Country Club, and she asked my friend and caddy for the week Mark Diamond what she should say if someone asked her about my finish in the tournament. “Tell them he did just fine”, Mark told her. When Mark related the conversation to me I concurred with his answer, even though I had finished dead last in the field of 156 (actually, to be fair, 4 guys withdrew after starting, so it was really…

Online Students: David Trungale Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

David has been working on lowering, staying deep, and using the ground. He also mentions that he’s concerned about his head moving forward in the backswing and his club twisting at the top. From the videos he’s sent in I see the same things happening. The first thing we take a look at is David’s posture and I use Adam Scott as an example of a setup I’d like him to emulate. I want David to get his weight more towards the balls of his feet and his shoulders further forward with his arms hanging more underneath him. Next we…

Online Students: Shane Barnes

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

“I have submitted payment and would like an online lesson. I have uploaded video of my 7 iron and driver at regular speed (hitting into a 10-15 mph wind) and also a 6 iron at 60 FPS (on a different day with very little wind). I have been doing the shaft between the legs drill to stay in the “box” better. I am not getting nearly enough lower body rotation and therefore not able to sustain as long after impact as I would like to. I also do not feel like I am able to get my right shoulder off…
