I’ve managed to qualify for the Senior Professional National Championship which starts September 28th (about a week from now) but I still haven’t been striking the ball well enough to feel in any kind of control of my rounds. In this video, I take my two most recently filmed swings, a gap wedge and a driver, and go over (again) the main items I am focusing on. I find the physical task of maintaining my depth in the backswing while keeping the right knee flexed to be the most difficult issue to deal with, and I have been paying extra attention to my foot pressure in an effort to improve my tendency to lift heading into transition and then lean into the front of my left foot as the downswing starts, which delays the opening of my hips and leads to an overly down the line exit. I need to keep my pelvis from twisting so much as I get to the top, so I feel like paying more attention to not letting the left heel lift straight up but rather keeping it down until later in the backswing and then making sure that if it comes off the ground the left hip still feels like it hasn’t pushed out towards the ball will pay dividends, although with limited trunk mobility it tends to make my swing shorter and feels like I will lose clubhead speed. I find that if I feel like I angle my takeaway more out away from me it helps me steepen my shoulder turn and keeps my right elbow from getting too low at left arm parallel, which in turn helps me not pull my head off the ball to the right as much. Again, all these things are stressing my ability to wind up my upper body without overly twisting the lower, so I just must keep working on it until it gets better. My release is still not the drive/hold that I am looking for, and my friend Jeff Mann has suggested that my right hand has been trained to throw the club somewhat at impact due to the left arm stalling and not being pulled through enough. If I can get the backswing and transition items worked out to a degree I can get my thought process all the way to the release, and at times when I feel the left wrist begin to turn down earlier I can produce a more sustained impact with the irons.
