It’s always nice to be able to see your swing under pressure, and when you’re Tony Romo and you’re paired with Steph Curry and Justin Timberlake in a televised event there’s a good chance you’re going to get some nice air time. Of course, this gives me a great opportunity to watch Tony perform when it counts and it gives Tony a good idea of what his tendencies are when he’s got some heat on him. We know what his swing tendencies are, and it’s not surprising that they came out in the swings you see here, but the big takeaway from the TV coverage has to do with his putting. Tony understands how he wants his stroke to work, but he doesn’t have a great amount of confidence in it and tends to start trying all sorts of things when the putts aren’t falling. I immediately spotted two major items from the film of him putting. The first was a consistent recoil (the putter pulling back after finishing instead of holding its position), and the second was way too much body movement during the stroke with his eyes following the ball right off the putter. These are things that happen under pressure and are very difficult to pick up unless you have the opportunity to slow down the stroke and watch the body movement closely. Our goal will be to find a fixed point to set his weight at address, then to stay as still as possible while waiting to look up until the putter has stopped moving and then holding that finish.
