TP&C: Online Lesson: Tony Romo

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

This is not a long video for the simple reason that Tony’s swing is improving and he is gaining on the things we have been working on. He tends to push his hands well out away from his body in the takeaway while fanning the face open, which gets the club flatter than the plane at left arm parallel (P3) and leads it to lay off and get a bit stuck in the downswing if he doesn’t rotate fast enough. Tony, like many powerful amateur players, sees a draw ball flight and tends to approach impact from the inside, which is why we have worked on visualizing a straight to left to right ball flight. The counter-intuitive thing about this is the movement of the hands and arms in the takeaway. It would seem that pushing the hands more outward going back would lend itself to a more out to in swing path, but Tony likes to roll the face open, get the club laid off at the top, and when he pushes his legs toward the target he gets stuck coming from the inside. Here he is making progress on all fronts, with the hands moving more toward his body going back and the toe fanning less open. This puts him more on plane at P3 and at the top, and by keeping his hips deeper and clearing the left hip faster he can get the club more out in front of his body in the downswing and exit more around to the left, all things that help eliminate the pushes and over-draws. It is a simple, powerful swing that is getting better all the time.
