Having semi-retired as GM of the Baltimore Ravens Ozzie now has a lot more time to devote to his golf, a game at which he struggles, quite frustrating for a world class Hall of Fame athlete. Ozzie has definite physical limitations with his replaced left hip and highly developed upper trunk and shoulder muscles that somewhat restrict his mobility, but his size and strength allow him to make up for lack of swing length with better technique. We have worked extensively on his grip, but he still tends to want to re-grip the club with his right hand in transition and finger-torque the shaft from a laid off position to a steeper one. Thus, our work recently has concentrated on getting the backswing to work more inward and up so that the shaft is vertical of the plane at P3. Oz usually over-pronates his left forearm between P2 and P3, causing the shaft to tilt flat and lay off at the top, but he does this after leaving the face closed and the clubhead well outside his hands in the takeaway. When he keeps the clubhead lower to the ground and rotates the face open with his hands without pushing the grip down starting the swing we can see the shaft move above the right forearm and stand up, making it possible for him to flatten it in transition with the right arm sidearm throwing move. Having the club approaching from more behind him and more open will hopefully encourage him to rotate his lower body more aggressively, something we start working on here with a foam noodle and an impact bag.
