TP&C: Tony Romo Part 5

I’m back down in Texas at Trinity Forest with Tony Romo, and we are making nice progress with Tony’s swing as well as his ability to manage himself on the course. I’m focusing on educating Tony about what his swing tendencies are and how he can address issues and improve over time by understanding what will make his swing more efficient and repeatable. The swings under the cover on the range are vintage Tony: he produces an awesome strike on the ball but his pivot movement tends to get out from under him a bit and causes some contact and directional problems, especially under pressure, as he found out this summer when he played in the Western Amateur and found his longer shots, especially the driver, to be lacking and getting him into trouble. We discussed the movement of the pelvis during the swing, and the feeling of keeping the hips back in the box while keeping the head out over the ball was a revelation. Out on the course his inclination to try to draw the ball for power and to ride a right to left wind exacerbates his right leg’s drive toward the ball and as you will see gets the shaft stuck way behind his hands on the approach to impact. I showed him the swings of Tiger in 2004 and how the arms and the club were always in front of his body and that had a real effect on the way Tony was looking at the overall pattern of a good swing, which feels to Tony more like a cut swing than a draw swing. I believe an athlete like Tony can do most anything he is told if he believes in it and works on it, so I’m trying to get him to look at things long term, even though it is difficult not to worry about the next round.
